This weekend I made an idiot run up to North Carolina to pick up my bee colonies for the season and managed to work in at least a few hours for an explore. This was a beautiful old school built in 1938 and still has an active elementary school behind it. Its in the DB last updated on 07 so I will try to fix that as I can. Unfortunately I was unable to make it inside due to the crazy amount of traffic at this place. At least fifteen cars parked behind the school with people coming and going, folks walking on the track, people hanging out at the gym, etc. Seriously, small towns, do people have nothing better to do? The brick work on this building was absolutely beautiful and it shows the amount of love that was put into these public buildings back when people truly cared about the next generation. There is an intriguing building behind the school to check as well as the school basement to explore so I will be back. Sadly, most of the interior is now completely gutted and the roof has been removed. Economic development waits for no one.

It's sad that a place that was once a point of pride for a community can be so easily discarded and allowed to fall apart like that. They certainly don't build them like that anymore.

I see they've been trying to secure the place against vandals. Kinda glad to see it, even if it does make it harder to get in. It's a neat old building.

Last time I was there ('04 or '05) there was no traffic whatsoever. I parked right behind the building and walked right in the back door. But it was a Saturday.

If you're ever through there again, check out the downtown. Not necessarily for UE, but because it's neat.
An old drive in, a large bakery (that makes the whole place smell like steakhouse rolls), and a neat old record store.
One of my favorite movies was also filmed there:
