##). Don't be afraid to ask.
If you did your homework right, you should know who owns the property on which you are trespassing. Before you go off sneaking around trying to get into the building, just ask them if you can see it. It never hurts to ask, and FWIW I have gotten access to countless buildings just by bullshitting with the property manager.

My thought based on no experience only thinking is that if you ask and someone says no its worse than not asking and just not being allowed. But since you have a red six and I have a white one under my name, you think otherwise..?

IME, better to beg forgiveness than ask permission. Every time I've asked I've been denied. I only ask if I absolutely can't get into the building any other way. In which case, it is usually not meant to be.

Eat and sleep, simple as that.

I'm poor and excitable. Sometimes when I'm wicked hyped for an urbex the next day I can't sleep...so I try to take a natural sleep aid like melatonin earlier in the night.

Good food is important. I once went to a site that required a half hour hike and a ton of challenging entry attempts on a cup of coffee and an english muffin with nothing on in due to no funding. I didn't get in and felt like I was gonna die half the day. Fuck that.

Take care of yourself before you go.

1. Keep your gear close. Opportunities come quick and randomly, as do problematic situations.

2. Check for cameras and prying eyes before you do something.

3. There's always a way in.

4. Constantly be aware of your surroundings and where you've been. You never know when you'll be in a race to the exit.

5. Assess the situation. Head for to the roof first.

6. Check windows. Often.

7. Paranoia runs rampant. Squash before it's too big.

8. No matter what happens, don't lose your cool.

9. Be comfortable with you team members to the point that you can read their body language.

10. You're only as fast, smart, quiet, or small as your least-feasible team member.

11. Don't consider your mission successful until the next group to go there after you makes it out safe.

12. Shit can come back to haunt you. Keep your ego under control.

13. After a full night of exploring, everything in the real world gets the volume turned down. Nothing can piss you off. Your word is law, and if other people break that law or question you, even that doesn't piss you off.[/i]

Tape (or bandaids), water, and a flash light. Easy, but until I put together a dedicated bag I forgot one of them every time.

Don't admit anything to cops, but don't be a dick about it.

I come up with a not-nearly-as-bad-excuse ahead of time just in case.

1. If you see someone, immediately attack with furious intensity
2. ALWAYS wear full camouflage and body armor
3. Keep the legs of your camera tripod fully sharpened for maximum stabbing and armor penetration
4. Be prepared to scavenge and hunt in order to survive during your mission
5. Before leaving for your mission, soak in gasoline all maps and related materials (classified information, lists of code words) so that you can immediately destroy them if capture seems imminent

Then you're not to be trusted :p

The ratio of journalists who will blow it out of proportion and make explorers out to be no good to honest journalists is high enough it's best to err on the side of caution.

0) Take only pictures leave only footprints

1) Always wear quality footwear

2) Never go it alone

3) Better to be over-prepared than under

4) That sound you heard, it wasn't what the paranoid guy thinks it is.

5) Always be kind to fellow explorers you meet

6) It's not about the ego, a good site will make you feel awe and forget about yourself

7) If you don't trust every member of your team with your life, get a new team

8) Never stop planning, be thinking 5 moves ahead

9) If there's no power, don't assume there are no cameras

10) Love the night, love history, love the beauty of decay

These are a couple of important things I've learned, for exploration and other life situations:

Trust in your skills and judgement. Don't second-guess yourself.
Along those lines, work to develop skills and judgement that you know you can trust.

And perhaps above all, always, ALWAYS hold on to your curiosity.

Doing asbestos I can

i see where you're going. but not all journalists are constant story hunters. we tend to have a private life to. and if there is one thing i learnt throughout life it's "what happens in vegasm, stays in vegas. for your own good".

1. Tecnu doesn't do a fuckin' thing. Zanfel is the only poison oak/ivy cure.
2. Bring rubbing alcohol/water mix in a spray bottle to easily wash your hands before getting in your vehicle. Also, shed extra layers. If you've got nasty shit/mold on you, you'll want to keep that in the trunk of your car.
3. Always wear pants, hat, and good shoes; you never know what you're getting into.
4. Don't die.

I acknowledged something important on a recent urbex to an industrial park.

NEVER EVER EVER fuck with the water. Don't get it on you, try to avoid going near it, don't walk through most water that might get into your shoes.

This place had a number of bright orange rectangular troughs of water. One the of the ones that honestly looked less sinister in color had two dead adult birds in it.

This means these birds landed in the water to drink and bathe--and died before they could leave. The water is lethal within a couple of minutes to small creatures.

Especially with industrial sites, don't even get close to the water. It's always bad...just much less bad in other places.
