Parking Tips

Usually when you need to procure transportation to a UE site, that involves driving there. If you're close enough to walk there or ride a bike, awesome. Just chain up your bike or hide it in some bushes, and you're good to go. However, parking your car can sometimes be an exploration in itself. After all, you don't want your car to be towed, ticketed, stolen, or vandalized. Here are some general tips - feel free to add your own.

First off, you need to have a UE site in mind. Once you do, look around the area with some satellite imagery, such as Google Earth, and look for parking. Ideally, you don't want to walk more than a mile, especially if you have heavy or conspicuous equipment / friends. Don't search in a straight line, search radially. A good parking spot might not be down the street, but a few blocks away. Look for shortcuts - maybe you can cut through some woods, walk along a canal, or even hop a fence. If you can minimize walking distance, you maximize parking potential.

The best-case scenario is to park at a nearby super-store (Walmart, Target, K-Mart, or what ever the case may be), because the huge volume of cars will give you relative anonymity and almost total safety from parking tickets or towing. Not only that, but if you suddenly need supplies, you can buy almost anything you might need.

If large commercial parking is not available, try a strip-mall or small shopping center, preferably one with several businesses. Everybody will think that you're somebody else's customer, and your car will be fine.

If there's public land nearby, like a park, library, beach, waterfront, or historical landmark (not in my town...), go ahead and leave your car there - it is public land after all. Things you'll want to avoid are schools, city hall, and of course police stations.

If you are unable to locate suitable parking like those listed above, you could also park in wooded areas or small neighborhoods. Pull off to the side of the road (don't leave your car near turns or corners), either up close to un-fenced woods or in between several houses. Like with small businesses, they'll all think you belong to somebody else. This could of course result in a parking ticket, or arouse the suspicion of nearby homeowners, so use your discretion here. Don't leave you car sitting around all day, but you'll probably be fine for an hour or two.

Another good strategy is to start off from a friend's house - their place might be within walking distance, and of course you'll be able to park there (especially if they're coming with you).

I have used all of the above methods to stow my car while I'm exploring, and so far I've never had to deal with unexpected damage or legal fees. Nothing is better than turning a corner and seeing that your car is still there, waiting for you to load up your dirty / soggy / broken equipment, climb in and crank the AC, and drive home.

Learning to enjoy the hike in and out, and being able and willing to hike 3-5 miles for an explore will make things a LOT safer and inconspicuous.

Alternatively, be a badass, buy a motorcycle and drive right on it and leave it parked by the door poised for quick escapes.

Park right out front, in the open, grab hard hat and clip board. And looked pissed about having to be there in the first place. No one will even give you a second glance.

There's no way in hell that I'm leaving my motorcycle in front of an abandoned bowling alley xD

I feel that most people over-think it for most abandoned buildings. Cops are unlikely to pursue things more so if you're out of state,

Hiking at night doesn't work well unless you're in a city or college town during the in session semester, and only if you can pass for a student. I've had enough close call encounters walking to and from places I shouldn't have. If it feels like you are suspicious and out of place, you are.

Lemme tell you a couple 2010 parking stories (there are many more):

Drive 400 miles to infiltrate active kirkbrides at 3am, after a 9 hour shift, start off by driving through the property multiple times, then park off-site but close-by, sneaking into discover all other access doors locked, go back to car, then park on site and walk up to the front door and then casually walk away from the security guard when he comes out, he assumes eyes must be playing tricks on him. Then get back in the car and drive through the property again multiple times wondering how the fuck could security be this incompetent? Then drive 500 miles back to work another 9 hour shift.

Park at hotel garage. Try to Sneak onto hotel roof. Decide to make perilous climb onto roof and just trip fire alarmed door on way out. Then pussy out when you decide traffic is too heavy and it's too fucking cold and decide to leave. Find out upon leaving, hotel garage only allows you to pay with a credit card and your credit card isn't working. Have to drive back next day and pay fee with check. Decide it was a bad idea to park in their garage but a good idea not to climb roof that night.

Park at a park-n-ride, sneak into powerplant, climb crane, get seen on camera at powerplant, evade cops, not security, cops, who show up to bust you, hide out for two hours, somehow walk out same five minute time frame as head of security is leaving, he sees you, calls cops, get picked up by cops you just evaded, talk [read: lie] your way out of arrest, get summoned to court hearing with chief of police present and security found out you climbed their crane (which you lied and said you didn't) and now is demanding your memory cards destroyed, go back to court for arraignment none of the prosecution witnesses show = everything dismissed.

Things I've learned from these:

It doesn't really matter where you park, luck and/or competence of security/police more important. Every place is different. But you probably shouldn't walk back along a main road to your car at night, waiting it out until morning is a better bet. Except in certain circumstances you probably shouldn't park on site.

Better to bike five miles before sunset, wait out for several hours until after midnight, do your two-three hour infiltration, evade security, hide out until sunrise and bike another five miles back to your car.

Drop Pack: a cheapo backpack filled with bottled water, food, tp, ziplock bags, poncho, space blanket, batteries, spare torch, sterno, anything you could want but aren't going to drag around with you all night. Leave it somewhere between the perimeter fence and your exit plan and you'll be grateful.

I worked a nine hour shift, drove 100 miles, met up with another explorer or two, then we drove 400 miles, parked off site, hiked in, found an open door to one of the wings, went in, all other doors to the stairwells were locked. I went back, got the car, parked on site, got out, shot some exteriors, walked to the front of the building, security guard walked out, I walked away, he didn't follow. Then we drove around the property some more to see if we could find another entrance. Then I drove back and worked another nine hour shift. no comment

Active state hospitals are surprisingly easy to drive and walk around late at night, I've driven through CVH many times without being bothered once.

Is it still badass if it's a scooter?

Anyway, I'm mostly in luck in this regard, thanks partly to the efficient public transportation all around the country, as well as the fact that abandonments are often used for parking, since there's no one to write up tickets. A common trick is to park my scooter next to a wall to use as a step to get over.

As long as it's over 100cc in displacement :p

Otherwise... We'll take it on a case by case basis. Haha

Park in front like a boss. If I can pull around to the back of a building or behind some shrubbery, I do it, but otherwise I just man up and walk in. Interestingly, the one time I pulled to the side of the road trying to be semi-inconspicuous, a nearby neighbor came storming out within seconds to shoo me away.

Funny note about the "I'm parked in front" shots...I was doing exactly that at a house I had just discovered and was making a mental note to come back to, and a police car drove past, slammed on his brakes, and sat there in the road staring at me. I casually got back in the car and drove away. If I do go back I'll probably park at the church or something in the small town a few miles down the road, and bike to the house. it was on a back road so I mistakenly thought no one would ever see me.

The two times I've had people confront me during exploring they started it off by stating "I saw your car..." So I learned a lot of these lessons pretty quick into my exploring career.

Sometimes you can come up with crafty shit, too.

Once I found a small building with a clothing donation bin in front and was lucky enough to coincidentally have bags of clothing I'd meant to send away. Parked in front with the bags beside and on top of the car. Even though it was a pretty busy road I was able to urbex the old car dealership with my car looking like someone was being generous out front in about twenty minutes.
