|  | | | i recently came across this website that shows you drainage basins / tunnels leading to them there all pretty old tho from the 70's i went into one i found and in the mape it said there was a 24' siphon? what is a drainage siphon/ what does it do are these the things that could kill you in a rain storm? and whats a hydrograph point? heres the web site.. http://www.springsgov.com/mddp/ im looking at the shooks run drainage basin right now cuz its in my back yard. literaly but these maps are hard to read..

| | | | A siphon is a large dip in a pipe. Water will usually be left in it. It is usually used for clearance under some other obstacle whether it is a low point in the land, another large utility service, rail line or road, or whatever else. Think of it basically like a big underground tank. Water flows into the top at one end. When it is full, water will spill out the top at the other end.
As far as safety goes, if there's water flowing and/or it's raining nearby upstream it's best to stay out. Middle of summer time, the water level may have dropped slightly but will likely still be standing in the bottom of the siphon. Sounds like a large structure. Might be worth crawling in to check out. Would not recommend trying to swim/dive to the other end as the drainage map does not show how long that standing water section could be.

| | | | Not to be a buzzkill, but I'm betting it's a sanitary sewer crossing under the creek. Its a *lot* more common for it to be sanitary, simply because there aren't the right conditions for a storm sewer siphon to be built in town.
The Springs has had problems with their 'creek crossings' in the past, mostly during floods when debris are eroding the bed from around the pipes.
