| | | This is one of my favorite rurex houses...probably because I can't get inside, and wanting what I can't have makes me want it even more. Like a beautiful married woman, she's untouchable. All I can do is dream about her and admire her from afar. I visited this house in April 2010 and again in July 2010. These photos are a combination of those two visits.
Up on the back porch.
Awesome little retro kitchen.
It was very difficult to stick my camera through the porch window to get this photo without touching the house. It creaked and swayed in the breeze, and I felt like if I even brushed up against it, it would topple over.
Comparison shots of April vs. July (sorry, the purple flare is really bad in the first one, the lens I used is awful when it comes to that)
I summoned up all my UE nerves and stepped in through this opening to rescue some canning jars a few days after my first visit in April. They were half-buried in a huge pile of broken glass and trash. I managed to extract about a dozen intact ones, holding my breath the whole time, terrified the house would come crashing down on my head if I exhaled. Two steps to the right, and I was back out again. I took the jars home and dated some of them to 1915 according to their logos. Most dated to the 60s. Now some of them are holding blackberry jam and habanero salsa in my kitchen. I'm glad I rescued them when I did, because as you can see above, a large portion of the roof fell in shortly after that. This photo was from July.

| | | Awesome! I hate it when ya find places like that... you can see that at one time it was a really interesting explore but its beyond remotely safe to enter. At least you did get some good photos from the little you could do!

| | | I know how you feel about not being able to go inside the house. There is a house I really want to go in but I can't because there is way to many windows and it is right on the side of the road.

Well, at first glance, you could have omitted the not being able to get inside part and I wouldn't have been the wiser. That's how good these shots look. Your 9th photo is the best. Excellent capture, and a good example of how blown highlights enhance a photo. They evoke a sort of ethereal or heavenly presence above/among all the decay. It's rather inspiring. Bravo!

Pssh! Never stopped me. ;) Many places I have explored are right on busy highways. I just walk in, get the shots, and leave. I tend not to linger in ones that are really obvious, though.

Oh, you funny, huh. ;) Thank you! I guess you are right, the ruined highlights do kind of add their own quality to the photo even if they are "wrong."

| | | Tread lightly! Yes, I like 9 as well, & 3. And while I’ve never deviated from “take only pictures”, in this case – you gotta go back and save those boots! In the mean time, I’m stopping by your place for some of that habanero salsa!!! YUM!

| | | I think its great that you are using some of the jars. We rescued some from my brother in law family homestead root cellar in Blairsville GA before being bulldozed and were also able to date them to around 1930 or so. Feels kind of cool that we can still use them. Good before and after shots, amazing to see how fast these places come down. I think in a few years you will be the last to have seen it standing.

I agree, I'm pretty sure it won't last much longer. I drove past it again last month just because, and it's falling down even more now. I know taking things from abandonments is taboo, but it made me so sad to see those awesome vintage jars just crumbling away in a pile of junk. It'd be one thing if they were lined up neatly on a shelf and this was a house that other explorers might visit, and I'd be depriving them of a neat discovery if I took them...nope, they were pretty much done for. I also use some of the wide-mouth ones for drinking glasses. I think "take only pictures" is a good general rule, but the occasional small trinket, or things that would otherwise be destroyed and deserve to be given a new life, I think are different. That's just my personal slant on scruples though.

Haha, unless it has a no trespassing sign on the front gate right?! Lol Old buildings like that are neat. It's almost like their patterns and structure that made them stand out from the environment eventually fall apart and make things random & unique again.
