Prairie View school and farm house, OK

One of my sub hobbies, (obsessions according to my wife) has been trying to find all these little one room school houses I have on some maps from the 20's and 30's, and what history I can find. Most of these places have gone the way of the dinosaur, especially the wooden structures, but a quite a few have at least some physical evidence remaining, though you have to look hard sometimes.

This was the Prairie View school in rural Osage county, Oklahoma. It's a little different as it was located on property with an old farmhouse. I'm told this wasn't uncommon, as a land owner would donate the land for use.

I've tried finding out some more information at the county courthouse with no luck, nor with the county historical society. I'm assuming construction in the 1900's or teens. As I often find, this was once located on the old "main road" between the towns of Hominy and Fairfax, well before the current state highway 20. Now its just an old dirt side road. This section of the map shows the school. The map is dated 1931, but the survey was in 1929.

The school itself had collapsed, so there really wasn't much to see. The property is now used to graze cattle.

The farm house can be seen on the right.

The storm cellar.

The farm house, however, was somewhat interesting.

I like the old wooden thread spool as a door knob on the screen door.

The front porch and main entrance. Very little graffiti on the roads I travel.

The kitchen.

This room was added for indoor plumbing.

Love that old fireplace. For it's time frame, this was a large place.

Sitting room or dining room. No closets.

Master Bedroom.

His and Hers closets.

The other bedroom.

My audience. Black Angus burgers as fresh as they come.

Ruins, the fate of all cities.

I love old abandoned houses more than life itself.

Someone was well off at one point, that place is HUGE for it's time. It's interesting just how big houses have really become. Most houses pre1940 never really topped 800sqft or so, now we all live in 1400-1600sqft

The glass is twice as big as it needs to be.
