this place looks awesome. I had never heard of it. I actually remember the Mare Island exit from when I drove down the coast last week. Should've stopped.

A couple of jerks started a fire in the re-employment building. That finally pissed the city off bad enough they boarded up the whole place. The big warehouses across the street were still open, until scrappers busted a big water line in the building. They have now boarded up those warehouses also.

You can still walk onto the pier next to those warehouses. There's a big hole in the fence on the northernmost side of the entryway. It's pretty cool. The multipurpose building next to the commissary is wide open. I don't understand the city's logic.

About those security guards. They do still patrol the north side of the island, just not as thoroughly as they do the south end. After the fire, though, there has been a big increase in police presence. However, they don't usually come around till late afternoon. Early in the morning on the weekends is a great time to go. The police are pretty cool though. One stopped me a couple days ago walking my dog. He just said to stay out of the buildings, and left. If that happened next door in Sonoma, you would have been handcuffed,, searched, and had your name run.

Thew sad thing is that even for a bankrupt city like Vallejo, sooner or later they might decide it's actually cheaper in the long-run if they demolish some/many/all of the structures on Mare Island they have control over, rather than to pay security to patrol them & for police to respond to incidents, plus always having the concern of (another) big fire in one of the abandoned buildings. While Vallejo doesn't technically own a lot of Mare Island yet, I think they're contracted for public safety and utility services.

Back around 2006 or so when I was poking around Mare, I was on a former residential street (modern dorm halls on my left, & big old mansion-style housing/admin on my right & the former Navy Cryptologic School/main Touro University class building straight ahead half a mile)) inside what I guess was the Touro campus when some old dude in a white pickup pulled next to me in my car & asked me what I was doing.

I told him the truth (military history buff taking photos) & he stated I was on University property & he told me to leave.

So much for the "social justice, intellectual pursuit & service to humanity" bullshit that they preach!

Anyway, I was both annoyed & impressed that my simply driving slowly down the road was challenged. I hung around there for a few more minutes taking photos, then I promptly went to explore the US Army Reserve parcels, where I toured without molestation.

I believe the city has plans to demolish the entire north part of the island, from the causeway all the way to highway 37. Except, of course, for the complex where Alco Metals is, up to the Earthquake Preparedness Warehouses. The reason they haven't done so already is that they say the cost is something like 4 million dollars. Being that they are going to be torn down, I found it odd that they could place a damage estimate on that fire.

I believe that whoever the city does hire for the demo, they are required to recycle 80% of the materials. I just wonder what their definition of "recyle" is.

The security at Touro University are assholes. I am not sure if they are the same as the general island security. They do drive the same type of trucks though. But the one's at Touro are just mean and nasty.

though security is prevalent on Mare they don't seem to be the brightest bunch, this place is full fun explores & plenty room to park. security seems to tighten the farther south you go, in our experience anyways. happy hunting!

I just explored this place over the weekend, and I fell in love with it! I was in the Napa/Sonoma area shooting a wedding and drove right past the island on Hwy 37. My jaw dropped to the floor. I had actually read this thread before I went up there, but I had no idea I'd be driving right past it en-route to where I was working. Luckily, I had some spare time, so I spent about an hour just cruising around and taking exterior photos of the various structures. I didn't try to go in any of the buildings, but most them appeared to be rather well-sealed. I will post my photos once they're all edited and stuff.

A couple friends and I have always been wanting to get out there. It still sounds like a really great place to explore. I was told that Sunday was one of the best days to go out there because there tends to be less security. Any tips?

just a little bump in honor of losing one of these sites this week. the warehouses & their residents will be missed.

It used to be that every time I visited this area I would see, or be approached by, some kind of security or the local police. In the last 3 visits in recent months I haven't seen anyone. The city's budget problems have cut the police force way back which might explain things.

There's quite a lot of variability in the way the buildings are secured. Some buildings are wide open (to the point of missing doors) and other, previously open buildings, are sealed up tight.

That's strange. I remember seeing somebody matching this description hovering about last time I was on the Island, but he was north near 37.

After looking at this thread I decided to spent my Saturday doing a little exploration and i decided to go to Mare Island with some of my buddies. After driving around for a bit we decided on the northern portion of the island because it is less used and there is little to no security presence around the unused buildings there. We explored the ReEmployment Center which was a little smashed up because people have been going there for years but there is some great art work and one hell of a view. I would definitely suggest that if you have a spare day and are in the area to go there, great place for beginners. There really isn't much there to go back to once you have seen it, there are some other buildings in the area but bolt cutters would be required on a majority of them, but i would suggests against it because it looks like the locked up building want to stay locked up. Over all great day and some good fun. Here are some photos for your viewing pleasure, enjoy ;)

Went here this weekend with a couple friends. I'd heard from a lot of people that this place wasn't chill anymore, but we went on a Sunday and only saw one security. Had a great and very successful day. We went into five of the buildings, three were open and the other two just required a little creativity :] One of the best places I've been to in a while.
