and....wont be returning... went with birdman and unregistered to check out The Donnellan Crypt, a family vault crypt under the franklin bridge in downtown Houston... most people dont know of its existence. its been filled with rocks to keep hobos out. but a few shovels will solve that. it was used as The Donnellan Crypt from 1849 - 1867 then was used to hold ordinance during the civil war. its also known that there are still unexploded ordinance all over the bayou. the family remains were removed in 1901 and buried in a glenwood cemetery vault. among the buried in the original vault were 2 of D's sons who were exploring the wreckage of an 1863 Confederate shipwreck at the foot of Travis street. The boys were killed by a bomb that they found among the remains of the ship.

this is going down to the banks of the crypt. past hobo camps...

wow, there's more graffiti since the last time I went by there. That RIP wasn't there before. I guess more and more people are finding out what it was. I think they actually just sealed it up about a year or 2 ago to prevent the hobos from continuing to go in there. Would be cool if you could get in. I want to say I've seen a pic of the inside on flickr but couldn't find the pic anymore, lol

yeah they filled it up to keep put hobos and to help support the bridge more.
i want to request a dig to get in. im sure its just a big empty rooms with shelves for the dead. but ittd still be cool to regain some history on it.

i would like to add that its debated that this isnt the crypt but the Magnolia brewery's service tunnel to the bayou when used for cooling beer. as is why its so big looking. but if you look at 1880's birds eye maps it even lists the crypt and this is where its shown on maps so its actually a debated spot

its either

A.) The Donnellan Family Crpyt/Vault
B.) The Old Magnolia Brewery

if anyone knows... id like to know

someone wrote to this guy and he said this.

"Louis Aulbach, the guy who wrote "Buffalo Bayou: An Echo Of Houston's Wilderness Beginnings" about the controversy over the brewery and vault. This is what he said, "The ruins of the Magnolia Building (the former Magnolia Brewery) are located on the downstream edge of the modern Franklin Avenue bridge while the Donnellan Grave Vault is directly under the bridge.""

but its still debated lol idk why

also

these are an extremely interesting read.

more stuff. cuz this is fascinating me beyond everything

"Immediately after passing under the Franklin Avenue bridge, we can see the remnants of one of the largest and most famous breweries of Houston. Several structures on the south bank of the bayou have survived from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century when the Houston Ice and Brewing Company operated the Magnolia Brewery at this location, and by 1903, nearly 200,000 barrels of fine quality beer were produced annually for thirsty Houstonians."

this is whats really left today...the magnolia ballroom and brewery tap.
