| | | Abandoned Military Base < on 4/12/2011 10:39 PM >
| | | This is my second post. My fiancé and two friends went here over the weekend expecting to find maybe one building, there were over 6 that we explored and probably 30+ more buildings that we didn't have time to get to. All of the buildings were at least 4 stories tall plus at least one sub level. We were there for a couple hours and then decided to come back next weekend. Sorry about the picture quality... I have a crappy point and shoot. A new camera will be my next investment. I also would have taken more photos but it was surprisingly active and I didn't want the camera flash to give us away. I didn't have a tripod so turning the flash off would have been out of the question.
I took this photo immediately after we stepped inside the first building
| they're not on a date apparently
| basement of the first building... we really need to invest in some respirators
| the door to the empty crawlspace that went on for hundreds of yards
| 3 of us disobeyed this sign
| I bet Issac Clark could have fixed this in a jiffy.
| couldn't resist pulling the cord and to our surprise it turned on!... just kidding it stayed off...
| graffiti about pot was EVERYWHERE in this building, it is located next to a "rich" community and this is where all the kids come to smoke.
| all of the buildings seemed to have a single long hallway on each floor that ran right down the middle of the rooms. the buildings were probably all barracks
| bubonic chronic... apparently turns you into a red eyed french stereotype
| the pipe systems in these buildings were INSANE! every basement was full of several rooms all like this one
| one of the crawlspaces. again these things went on for hundreds of yards
| every room in the basement also has one of these holes connecting to a huge crawlspace
| one of the flooded rooms in the basement
| the only bright color in the basement... this valve was really out of place
| giant garage like room in the basement with no access for anything larger than a person
| more hallways
| we told my friend that this was a wig... he put it on his head. then almost puked when we told him it was a mop head.
| i love these chairs
| there were green arrows all over the walls in one building. our buddy Mophair was really concerned about following them, they led to "party moes" aka the roof.
| this led to the roof, didn't take any pics because I didn't have a tripod.
| a super tiny room only big enough for one person to stand and this little sink
|
| going on vacation!
| man's best friend!
| The source of the HUGE quantity of broken glass that was EVERYWHERE.
| the bathroom thankfully complete with open windows... it smelled like hot death in there
| my attempt at taking my photo in a mirror like a sexy teenage girl...
| considerate vandals at least marked the exit... after they broke the original sign
| all of the fire extinguishers stashed at the bottom of the stairwell
| |
More pictures to come as soon as we can find time to make it back out there!
Too lucky for my own good... |

Virginia. About 20 minutes from my house. I really can't state this enough, THE PLACE IS GIGANTIC! Tons of buildings, all of which are several floors and hundreds of yards long, a radio tower, a water tower, a gymnasium and swimming pool (which are both still used by the county), and apparently there is a large network of underground tunnels under the place. It was built in 1941 as a listening post (intercepting German communications) it was later used for the same thing during the cold war.

| | | if people are interested we could put together a small meet perhaps. We could check out the base and other stuff in the area... I'd have to come up with a list of stuff that's worth checking out though.

| | | That is pretty sweet! And don't sweat the point-n-shoot; Get a $30 tripod and a nice flashlight, learn how to set long exposures in your camera's settings, and you can actually get some pretty sweet images, even in dark interiors.

| | | Yeah if people are interested in a day trip or something like that we can definitely set one up. I just want to make sure I have an idea of how many are going.

I'm from Virginia, and I'm down too. Just went to a similar location recently, but this sounds bigger and more fun. If you have a date set let me know and I might roll out depending on how far it is...
