If you aren't using the timer, you should. It will make the pictures much more in focus. When you press the button yourself, you inevitably shake the camera a bit.

As far as painting the room with light, if you are using a torch(flashlight) set it down somewhere, the shadows will be much crisper than if you are holding the light pointing it. Does that make sense?

yeah, i'm using a 2 second timer on every photo

I usually have a problem with laying the torch down because then the top half of the photo is really dark or the sides will be very dark
