Chuch of God, Burbank OK

This old abandoned church in Burbank, OK is on it's final days. Somewhere between December of 2010 and April of this year, the roof partially collapsed. As with many of these old buildings, if the roof had been kept in some state of repair, the building would have lasted for many more years, but alas, this was not the case.

As usual, information was scarce. Luckily, there was some documentation and items in the old church itself that helped with it's history. Burbank was officially founded in 1907 with the establishment of the post office though several homes and businesses flourished before that.

I know it wasn't there before 1906. so my best guess is construction between 1906 and 1910, but possibly as late as 1915. It was located in the business district close to the old bank.

The official designation was the "Church of God", at least in the later part of it's life. This was, and is, a common church name in the area and denotes a christian church not specifically affiliated with one of the major branches, i.e. Baptist, Methodists, etc.

This was a simple, small town church of Wooden construction with seating for
approximately 50 people. The main church was basically a single large room, with a smaller room at the back for the reverend and/or Sunday school classes. The documentation shows there was a parsonage with the church, but it no longer exists.

The town boomed with oil discovery in the 1920's and faded with the oil, beginning in the 1930's. This church predates the oil discovery, and was probably one of, if not the first, church built in town. The building was built prior to electricity as it was added later using the standard ceramic insulators and wax paper coated wiring. Bits of more modern wiring where added later, along with gas for heat. The building was uninsulated. With a basic heating and no cooling system, I can only imagine what it would have been like on a hot Oklahoma Sunday or a frosty winter.

The last proven activity I found for the church was 1973. The roof, originally wooden shakes, had been recovered with asphalt shingles, but the shingles have disintegrated so badly the remains of the old wooden shakes where the sole remaining protection. With the water in, the rot slowly ate away at the rafters until the collapse.

The windows appeared to be original, though the glass was gone. Other than the birds, no congregations have met here for the last 40 plus years. Ironically, the day I stopped for the photos, a large grass fire in the area came within a few feet of the remains, which would have gone up like gasoline.

The Church of God.

The old piano was an Hobart M. Cable. The company originally bult pianos in La Porte, Indiana, but it appears they moved to Chicago in the 1930s. The company went out of business in 1965, but a Chinese company makes pianos using their name today.

An old Hobart ad from 1915.

Old photos of the Hobart Cable Chicago factory.

The back room.

Postmarked 1970.

Back outside.

The old bell still stands in the tower.

I went back in for one final look around. I couldn't find any type of makers mark on the old seating.

I noticed the old light switch was on. I turned it off as I left.

Fantastic as always! That bell must weigh at least a half ton, probably only one or two good storms more and the rotting wood will give way, and I hope nobody is inside the building when she falls!

When I first went into the bell tower and took a shot looking up, I couldn't see the bell. I stood there for quite awhile surveying everything. I didn't realize the bell was still there until I was at the back of the building. My initial thought was the same as yours.

Beautiful images. The photos of the bowing roof near the alter are simply amazing. Thanks for the research too. Lets just hope kids, teens and douche bags keep away from it.

And let's hope the bell stays in place with the building, as it should.

Actually, back in the day, this type of seating was not that uncommon in churches. In addition to this one, I know of 2 others in the area that also had theater style seating. All the churches where from the early 1900's.
