Technically should be in critiques, but all of them are high-school art show quality. It's a lot better than some of the stuff I've seen at high school art shows

1 and 4 are my faves. They are all pretty decent though. Like buslady said, they are way more creative than some of the crap that passes for art in high school photo shows ("herp derp here's a rusty fire hydrant, I'm such an awesome arteest!")

No. Noisy and weak. The previous responses might stroke your ego here, but you really need to improve.

Alright thanks for the input. High School art shows are stupid anyways. Look at this extreme closeup of a bee! Here's a picture of my friend, I photoshopped it black and white which automagically makes it art! I'm so cool and hipster and artsy.

And you're in a tunnel waving a flashlight around, it's pretty similar, so don't get so high and mighty. (Maybe the bees are really cool.)

I think the biggest issue is they are really noisy and grainy and doesn't seem like composition was a big issue. Keep experimenting though.

I have never thought to have "highschool art show" and "quality" in the same sentence.

+1

But I guess it depends what we consider "high school" quality. I mean, I sort of consider these high school quality. I do not particularly care for them, nothing personal. Heck, I don't even care for 75% of the photos I take. So, don't feel bad.

For recommendations, use a much lower ISO. The noise is debilitating. It's fun to experiment with lightpainting but it has become so cliche. I like the drain/UE theme, but maybe experiment with something more unique. Something other kids will be like "shit, I never thought of looking at something that way". That's why macro bees are cool to people. They don't think about it. It's different from the normal view. Macros are like that.

Also, I know it is easy to quickly divert attention by ragging on other people when people rag on you. I mean, we all have done that or still do it. Don't be so quick to jump on the band wagon though. It's cool. You are trying something. Not everybody likes it, just like not everyone like bumble-bee-macros. It's cool. Try something else, post it, let's have a look. Keep shooting and good luck!

It's true what others have said about the grain, but you'll learn in time.

It's a high school art show, what's the worst that can happen?

If I was you, I would submit number 2. Given that the majority of people viewing a high school art show aren't high art critiques or familiar with photography, I think it would come off as pretty unique. Especially if none of your fellow students have anything like it.

I wouldn't print it any bigger than 8 x 10 though.

Like others have said, there's a lot to learn, but it seems like you're off to a good start. This work is a lot more creative than a lot the kids I went to HS with and a lot better than some of the stuff the kids I work with now submit for their class.

Keep working, keep learning and fuck it - it's just a high school art show. Submit some work, get feedback and have fun.

This is the point I was trying to make. I think pretty much anything is acceptable in a high school art show. All that changes in college, and then even more in the real world

I disagree. light painting might have started to be cliche but its difficult to work in drains sometimes so grainy images might occur depending on the camera. i don't think this is the best work i have ever seen, but i would not describe it as weak at all. its a good attempt at light painting. and some people enjoy noise just as other enjoy light painting and other enjoy HDR. so it's the persons choice.

i think if you were to enter anything it would be 1,3, and 4.

the other two are unneeded and dont do the others justice.

however noisy 1,3, and 4 are, i think the noise adds to the lighting effect you created with the light painting and the colors that you used, an is really noticeable in the water running down the center of the shots. it's also very apparent in one, but you have created a graffiti-like quality to that image with the colors that you used, that it then creates a very interesting composition and adds a feel of texture and grittiness to the image which i think is what really makes that shot.

Agreed. Yes, noise is deplorable but I don't mind looking at it in these shots. I think the grainy texture adds to the feel.

If you had to bump up the ISO to a level that is past acceptable for your camera in order to capture the light painting nicely, then I think the noise is a fair tradeoff IMO. But, I'm more of a "does this photo interest me?" person than a pixel peeper.

They're allright attempts but I wouldn't call any of these final print worthy. 1 is best but it's not that well executed.

Light painting in a drain is a pretty played out subject too.
