| | | Jerm, Nice pics and writeup. That's a great location, and the variety of industrial space, tunnels, greenhouses, and fields makes it that much more interesting. Plus the variations in micro-climate as you noted. I have to agree with other people about the graffiti though. I usually don't mind graf in abandonments, and in some places I think it really adds to it. But the thing with this place is that it was an incredibly cool spot where you could watch nature slowly reclaim the man-made, without too much intervention. When things start getting tagged, smashed, vandalized, and art-i-fied, then it loses that bit of awesomeness. I guess it's inevitable, really. If it's not the graf (which I think would look OK in other contexts), someone else is going to go around smashing things up anyway. If this place was located closer to civilization, it would be totally different now... Need to go back..... hopefully soon. And yeah, bring on the tunnel pics.

i understand the perspective most of you have about the preservation of these places, i get it, and i respect it. i myself however have always been more fascinated with the transformation of public space and abandonment buildings alike. The vandalism, graf, hobo remnants and whatever else happens in these places is just as much a part of the history of these places than the purposes they may have served previously. And this difference in the way we appreciate these places only allows for a broader perspective on the story that we all tell as a whole. This place seems to have remained virtually untouched for 14 years, that's remarkable, in Vancouver buildings are tagged and torn down within months. As much as some people would like to blame UER for places going to shit, if something is a little out of the way, people just don't go. Also, there isn't anything that could be burned to the ground here. [last edit 4/6/2011 8:21 PM by Air - edited 1 times]

i'm aware of that you lippy mechanic bastard, but in 2008, when one of Vancouver's most prolific graf artists and my dear friend open5 passed me a can and told me to bang, i banged. that's who i was then, i'm not gonna apologize to you for that, despite the fact that i have some regrets. i have grown and moved on from that stage of my life. but since you need to pick on someone via your keyboard to feel better about yourself, i'll continue to be your scapegoat bandi. i have not put any street art near ANY abandonments since learning of UER's rules. i will continue to respect these places, in the way that true explorers do, because i want them to be shared between us all. although i am admittedly stubborn and antagonistic, i have changed my ways. so respectfully (again) good sir, either get off my dick or... next time i'm out Campbellford way, lets grab a beer.
