| | | Recon, recon, recon. Drive past a place a zillion times to get a feel for how much vehicle and pedestrian traffic to expect at different times of day. Look for places you can park without being conspicuous, if necessary, park nearby and walk over. Its best to start with something remote and small. Then work your way up to big busy sites. If it helps, bring a trusted friend. Above all, keep your cool. The worst that could happen is you'd be asked to leave before getting any good shots. You'll be fine. Like they say, the only way to get over your fear is to face it. Now get out there and take some awesome photos.

+1 Yes! Why didn't I ever think of that?

| | | I think it also helps to try to re-program yourself. Many people see these buildings as bad, scary, dangerous, ugly, rife with crackheads/gangsters/watched 24/7 by the police. For me the only thing true of the above is dangerous, and that's not every case, just be smart and protect yourself (good shoes, jeans) and don't walk on a floor that looks like it'll collapse (unless you are insane like me). To me, what everyone else sees as an eyesore full of crack smoking rapists is a thing of beauty beckoning to let me in. I get so excited that I often throw caution to the wind and walk right in boldly. The thrill of a new place to explore overrides the nagging fear. I am by no means a seasoned explorer, I've only been at this for about two years and explored maybe 18 or 20 places, but I have yet to encounter any bad people or police. I have only been run off from a property once and that was before I even set foot on the grounds (I had just parked my car and had walked about ten feet with my camera in hand and out comes this big angry redneck hollering "This here's prah-vit prah-perty!"). So in my very non-expert opinion, the chances of all the things you worry about happening are extremely low. And once you have a few explorations under your belt, I'm positive the fear will subside and you will wonder what on earth you were so afraid of.

| | | Posted by aurelie ain't nothin' to it but to do it. Weigh the consequences against your reasons for going. If you don't feel that the risk is worth it, perhaps this isn't the ideal hobby for you. You could stick to lower/no risk explorations at first to get acclimated, or you could just grit your teeth and bite the bullet, so to speak. A lot of people use this hobby as an outlet for adventure and an adrenaline rush. If you aren't one of them, and never will be, you could get your abandoned building fix by exploring places with permission, or taking tours.
|
This. all of this. It can still be fun with permission or a tour. That might be a good way to start, with permission from somebody. That way you get a feel for what it's like to be out exploring sans the danger.

"That's it? If you had a million dollars, you'd do two chicks at the same time? " "Damn straight. I always wanted to do that, man. And I think if I were a millionaire I could hook that up, too; 'cause chicks dig dudes with money". "Well, not all chicks." "Well, the type of chicks that'd double up on a dude like me do."

| | | Yesterday me and my friend were taking pictures in this abandoned building (I made a thread...) and some guy walked up to us and mumbled some things about how people stole all his wire, we said we were just taking pictures and he left us alone after warning us that we could get arrested (yet it was his property, I think...?) But the thing is, if you're not doing anything malicious, don't look suspicious, and act cool if anybody encounters you you'll be fine. I'm not experienced in UE, but it's the same way with anything. Keep a cool head, and you'll be fine. Or, find some sites that are far away from anybody and you'll get that feeling of excitement and discovery and not be able to stop.

| | | Posted by hibilly I decided to post this in the rookie forum because im some what of a rookie but i was planning this UE but shot it down at the last moment because i have this fear of being caught any ideas on how to get over this fear Ps sorry about any mistakes in spelling typing on my phone sucks =(

Without disclosing your location exactly, or where you're exploring, maybe a kind forum member who is experienced in UE can go with you. That is the safest and best way to get into UE. Groups of 3 are usually best to ease fears of being caught. Having 2 people is more stressful but better than going alone if you are uneasy. See if there are meetups in your area, or run one of your own. We're having one at a Denny's in Cali this weekend. Usually a bunch of people will show up, and a lot of them will be people who aren't FM's yet. The FM's will usually break into groups and take the new explorers on an easy run to get your feet wet. That way you can make some friends and have a partner to UE with. I am not a fan of single person explores but I know most people on here do because they either live in a location where it's hard to find a partner, or they just enjoy it. I have been injured before and did manage to get to my car but things could have been worse. I've also seen an explorer's kneecap pop sideways after landing from a fence on his feet. You never know what could happen. And I don't think anyone asked how high security the location you are trying to do is. I don't quite agree that if you are nervous or scared, that UE isn't the hobby for you. It all depends on the location and the night you go. The weather....sounds...cloud cover, or whatnot. If you felt like you should ditch, then it could be jitters, or it could have been legitimate.

| | | I agree start small. I know alot of people don't like goin alone, I do it because there is no one around thats into to this. But, everyonce in a while I'll talk my roughneck bud into goin in some place. Like everyone else has said, watch thee floors. And, if caught its a slap on the wrist.
