Hi,

Over the weekend I took some photos. Just want some advice on how to improve on these dark shots.. Or opinions....I'm using a canon SLR 500D. 18-55mm.

Thanks.

Do you know how aperture/shutter speed/ISO work? On an SLR you can control all three of those things to change how the photo will come out... but you need to understand how they all work together.

attempt the absurd!

Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO are all the same for the three photos.

Aperture F8 Shutter Speed 1/60 and ISO 400

That's what I am really not understanding how to use them all together...

Have a read through http://stopshootin...-lessons-in-order/ and you will get a good understanding of how they work.

Aperture is used to control depth of field through the use of a small hole in the lens. Say a high aperture like f/22 will create a large depth of field meaning that everything will be in focus. something like f/1.2 will create a small depth of field meaning everything in front and behind will be blurry, this can be used to create an effect called bokeh.

shutter speed is used to control how fast the picture is. something like 1/4000 (of a second) will create a freeze frame effect, good for action and crap, because less light is let into the camera. on the other hand a slow like 30" seconds will create a slow shutter speed and let more light into the camera over the 30 seconds. You can use this in drains to illuminate them more and do light painting.

ISO is a term from film that related to how sensitive it is. A high iso like 1600 is more sensitive to light then 100. So if you wanted to do hand held shots in the dark then use a high iso, so you don't need a tripod. Though with a high iso there is a side affect of creating noise, which will make the picture grainy and noisy, doesn't look too good. the only way to combat this is a longer shutter speed/ larger aperture (f1.2) and a lower iso (and the use of a tripod)

So now lets have an example.

Sunny day, you want to capture a guy in mid air while jumping. use a high shutter speed (too freeze motion), a larger aperture (f8 or something), and probably an iso around 400 and you would get an okay picture.

But say on the other hand you want to blur his jumping then you would use a slower shutter speed (A second or something), a smaller aperture (to let in less light to compensate for the slower shutter speed which is letting in more light)and you could probably stay with the same iso.

anyway hope that makes sense. i haven't read over it so it could be abit wishy washy. if you wanted to meet up i'm sure something could be arranged.

Don't be afraid to use one of the automatic settings on your camera. The little picture of the mountain for example.

Get some books on the basics of slr photography, and one on your actual camera.
Get to know your camera. Know it veered then your own hand.
Then practice, practice, practice.

They say "you can't judge a book by its cover!" I say "YES you can, if the cover has a girl on it with a cock in her mouth, its PORN!" if she's 18 and the cock is black, its GREAT porn!

+1
Also an SLR is a film camera with an exchangeable lens system. A DSLR is a digital SLR. the 500D or Rebel t1i is a DSLR.

Thanks so much for all the advise that has been given. Hopefully I will get there, I guess I"ll have to get outside once the weather clears up and just practice until I get somewhere.

dont wait for the weather to clear up.
all types of weather make for great shots.

Practice inside in darker settings so you can play with longer exposure times.

Edit - Also, in the example posted you aren't going to be able to do much more without bracketing the shot... shooting at different exposure settings and then combining the images.
