|  | | | Next on the list of Louisville's Industrial Giants of Yesterday is the Axton-Fisher Tobacco Company.
During its 39 years as a corporate entity, A-F rose from a small manufacturer of leaf products to a publically traded corporation on the New York Curb Exchange, reaching a peak fiscal year of $28 million in 1934 with $1.4 million in profit and was selling 5% of all American cigarettes from its lone warehouse on West Broadway. A-F introduced the world to Spud, the world's first mentholated cigarette in 1926, as well its highly successful Depression cigarette, ten cents per pack Twenty Grand.
It was the death of company president Woodford Fitch Axton in 1935, selling of the family shares by his heirs, and heavy damage to factory equipment and raw product in the flood of 1937 that finally put the company under. By 1944, the Bank of America liquidated all assets to the Philip Morris corporation.
Collections of junk littering the plant's interior suggest that the Axton-Fisher warehouse was used as a community center during the 1990's. Today, it stands vacant, its name on the National Registry of Historic Places, as home to a gallery of art by several local taggers.
