| | "The Underground" in downtown Toronto < on 3/27/2011 11:59 AM >
| | | Hey, I'm new to UE and pretty excited to find out more about it, and do some more exploring! I thought I would start out with this posting, of what we used to call "the Underground". I was there a few years ago, about 2003/2004, it was an abandoned underground parking lot that a group of street kids had made their "home". I was just traveling through the city and was invited to stay there for the couple of weeks that I was in town. I had no camera at the time, so these pictures are from a year later when I returned to see if anyone I knew was still around. I found that it had been closed up tight, and no word of the kids who lived there, and the photos are just from the main entrance and the roof. The inside was actually much larger and quite deep, I think about five floors or more down, lots to explore and find and conveniently right in the heart of Toronto! I pitched my tent on the roof for a couple of nights and snapped these few photos, but I am wondering if anyone is familiar with the building, or what has become of it? It's likely been torn down by now, but you never know? I remember most vividly the smell, it was always warm and although dank it wasn't unpleasant. Any time I catch a whiff of something similar I remember this place and those people.

| | | this place looks really cool I don't know how a parking garage downtown can get abandoned when it's so hard to find a parking spot good find though.
The sign said "Anybody caught trespassin will be shot on sight" So I jumped on the fence and I yelled at the house, "Hey! What gives you the right?" http://www.flickr.com/photos/evman/ |

| | | That first shot....it looked like a condo was going up about two years ago. Like some other projects in Toronto, I guess the recession hit it hard.

| | | I am also have trouble understanding how a parking lot can become abandoned when parking in Toronto is so hard to find. The last place I worked I had to pay $40 per day to park. I guess in some cases the structure is in such bad shape it isn't worth the cost of maintaining. I had a similiar discovery to the original poster back in 1974 or 1975. I was living in a highrise building on Spadina Avenue that supposedly had two levels of underground parking but discovered there were actualy six levels, Four of the levels had been sealed off behind a wall complete with 4 or 5 abandoned cars. I posted about it in length on the Newbie Welcome Thread.

| | | It def looked like it was abandoned before it was completed, so it's possible that it might have been a condo development. In any case, I don't know why it was never finished or what became of it! A shame.

| | | Very cool story. I'm afraid I have no idea where this may be or have been. Probably redeveloped now... Do you have any memory of what the address was or more likely some nearby intersections?

| | | Bah, I recognize those red buildings in the background too. I just can't quite place where it is...
