Anybody have much experience with this? Or going in abandoned mines? Haven't really myself, but always been interested in it enough to travel more towards the mountains to check some out.

Caves rock. Tick in middle virginia does iron mines, and there are caves west of here.

There are a few caves near harrisburg (real caves... slide through the mud, bring your own lights, no tour guide caves). It's a fun experience.

I've done a bit of both.

For caving, I really suggest meeting up with your local grotto: http://www.tritrogs.org/ . They know where the caves are (locations are closely guarded, to protect the caves), lead caving trips, and have loaner gear (so you don't have a spend a lot of money up front on a helmet and lights).

I know NC has some explorable abandoned mines, but I have no idea about locations. I wouldn't go in a mine alone, without already having some caving experience, anyways. Mines are a bit more dangerous.

I'd offer to lead a mine trip, but I've got a new baby at home, so it'll be a while before I get to go exploring again.
