| | | Louisville, KY enjoyed a huge industrial boom beginning in the late 19th century and lasting for almost all of the next, with no small part being owed to the Ohio River. Pictured above is one of the giants of that movement, circa 1918, Ballard & Ballard Mills. Nestled right on east Broadway, with commanding access to Beargrass Creek, ergo its own direct gate to the River, Ballard & Ballard Company quickly exploded with business, and for a time was indeed the largest grainery on earth. Sadly, the facade pictured went up in flames in 1971. The rest of the buildings were subsequently razed, except for one tall and menacing structure still looming over the historic Smoketown neighborhood. Today the property is used for storage for some unknown owner, but there are still a few clues as to who owned it previously.

| | | Yes, I try to research the sites as deeply as possible to find out all about what it used to be, who it belonged to, and how it impacted the city. Louisville has a great industrial history. Fun fact: the guy who invented the cardboard pop-tubes for our biscuits, and the recipe to make the dough refrigeratable, lived in Louisville and worked for Ballard & Ballard
