| | Lone Jack one room school < on 3/16/2011 5:14 AM >
| | | This is the old Lone Jack school in rural Pawnee County, Oklahoma. Built in 1927, I've found paperwork that lists it up until 1967, but I'm not sure it was still active as a school then. The school, like almost all these rural schools, was named for the small community which existed around it. The Lone Jack community existed from the early 1900's until the 1930's. These communities where never really towns, more of a neighborhood. Nothing remains of Lone Jack, except this old school. I have several old maps and copies of maps from 1910 through the 1940s that list the rural school locations and I've been slowly searching them out to see what remains. This is a clip of the map I used for this school dated 1931. I have a 1921 map that shows the original wooden school in the same location.
The school suffered a fire after it was abandoned, or perhaps was the reason it was abandoned, leaving only the shell. Many of these schools, especially the wooden structures, have nothing at all remaining to mark their existence. An example is the Skedee Valley School shown on the map about 3 miles east of Lone Jack of which absolutely nothing of the community or school remain. It had a full basement beneath the main school with entry via the cellar door. Because of the basement, this school did not have the typical cellar. I also suspect, that this was used as a community shelter, as well as for community functions. There may have also been direct access from inside the building, but with the fire, it's impossible to determine. The entrance faces south, with the play ground to the west/southwest, with the outhouse's to the east. These where a his and hers setup, widely separated, with concrete sidewalks to both. A well was between the two. At the end of the pics are a couple of old photographs of the school, one from the 30's and the other from 1945. View from the west side. The large windows in the west seems to have been a fairly common design on these schools.
View from the east side where the well was located.
Parts of the original plaque remain.

Hidey hole for tornadoes?

Remnants from the playground.
Not sure what was here.

Old photos of the school. Notice the teeter totters to the left in the first picture taken in the 1930s.

Ruins, the fate of all cities. |

| | | Nice...reminds me a bit of the old Kent, Texas schoolhouse ruins; similar condition, with an accessible basement.

| | | I like these. What a cool shell. We dont really have basements & cellars down here, so I enjoy seeing those. I remember having one when we lived more up north, but I dont think I know anyone in LA with one.
