| | | My first UER (York Redoubt, Halifax, NS) < on 3/11/2011 4:00 PM >
| | | Hi, everyone; I'm new to UER, but not to exploring (or to photography), which are two of my favorite pastimes (see my Flickr profile). I moved to Halifax recently for school and I've started exploring as many nearby ruins as I can - I'm from Alberta where things like ruins and fortresses are trickier to find. My sister and I went to York Redoubt near Halifax about a week ago, and we found a few interesting things. One of them was a cave just off the coast, at the end of the main trail (and then down a much smaller trail) by the Redoubt. There is a surprisingly intact, well-built high-ceilinged brick room in there, connected to a few tunnels (which were full of 3 inches of water and ice at the time). The entrance to the cave:

Subterranean Fireplace Wider by Herr Haller, on Flickr We were quite surprised at how intact the roof was, but we were mystified by why this place was constructed (at great cost, I expect), and what that... fireplace thing is? We would appreciate it if anyone had some tidbits of info about who built this place, and why. The other really strange thing we found is this thing, found while bushwhacking smack in the middle of nowhere south of York Redoubt:

| | | Great photos, the iced over cave looks fantastic. Do you know where exactly that iron cylinder is? I'd be interested to see it up close. I should be free Sunday to do some UE if you're available to come out. Just message or email me.

Hi, nootz; I probably can't make it to anything this Sunday, I've got 3 papers on the go unfortunately. We might be interested another time though, depending on our workloads. I'm not entirely sure where the object (it was spherical, not cylindrical) because my sister and I stumbled across the object entirely by chance, in some dense, low spruce forest (you had to bend low and scuttle along in the area). If you want to find it, bushwhacking is unavoidable. It had a large hole punched in the left side (from the photo's perspective), about 1.5 inches diameter, and two smaller holes on the right, one of which could have been a bullet-hole. The area we think it is in is far south-east of the naval engineer's school and across a small road that runs east-west. There is a tiny little building there with glass windows looking south-east over the ocean, all curtains tightly drawn. Behind that building is a small trail (look for the cigarette butts!). After that, we were mostly heading south, south east to try to make for the shoreline but I can't be any more specific than that. I have a Google Earth .kmz file with a polygon bordering the area we believe it was in. Since I'm not sure how to attach files to posts, I'd be happy to email it to you if you want. Good luck, I'd be very interested if anyone has anything else to add about this object. I regret not taking a side view but the forest was so dense I was sick of crouching and being scratched up ;-P [last edit 3/12/2011 4:24 PM by Haller - edited 1 times]

Thanks for the friendly welcome, tjsmagic and everyone else! My sister and I are just getting into UER, and as I say neither of us are native Nova Scotians (Albertans), so we could certainly use some local knowledge. We'd be interested in getting together with some like-minded people eventually, especially after school settles down a bit over the next several weeks. We're also really interested in foraging as well as UER - we try to combine foraging for interesting medicinal/edible/etc herbs, plants, and fungi. Anyone else here also interested in combining the two? York Redoubt is interesting because you can do both - UER the fort to heart's content, then cross the road and head into the woods on the other side.

Ok, my bad. I thought TJ was talking about the cliffside cave, not the spherical object.

It's an overworked word. It's mine. Let's go into the mine. Blow that mine! We need to revise the language.

The more I look at it the more I think that there's no way that it's a mine at all. No pressure plates, just a few loops. I'm no expert but Google Image searches for harbour mine vs. metal buoy turn up results that seem to back my opinion a little bit.

Yeah, I missed that one. Now I don't know.... I still think it's a buoy but wouldn't be surprised to learn it was a mine. Seems odd to find a mine discarded like that, but not unheard of.
