| | | Mmmm the tunnel isn't quite so long... Chop off almost a quarter of your guestimate. I have GPS co-ords for the other side of the tunnel somewhere on my computer if I can find them I'll map the other side for you. |
that would be awsome. one day ive got to get to the other side of that thing. the guestimate for the other enterance location was based entirley on what i could see from above. just for the record, i am no expert at track placement. i just like hiking along old track beds.

| | | Posted by jerm IX I was there 2 days ago. less than a km in to the tunnel there is a wall of icicles blocking the way.

I'm very clearly wrong about which tunnel is the Blue Ghost Tunnel. The tunnel that I recall was only 200-300 ft long at most. I'll have to check with the person who brought me there, it has been so long now
|
Yup, 200-300ft is a much more accurate estimate. I'd say you can only walk about 100ft in from the one end and the rest is flooded...

| | | i've been here. its boring unless you go with a superstitious panzy like my roomate. "OH GOD WHY IS THAT HERE. OH GOD WHY IS THIS HERE" the cars are long gone, Completely scrapped or rotted away. I did however find a whole bunch of nothing lol. the swing bridge is pretty cool though and theres apparently a "sunken ship" Which turned out to be spilled timber jammed in one of the abandoned locks. good times

Wrong. "The Blue Ghost Tunnel was built in the 1870s. It was constructed out of limestone blocks from a local quarry and is about 665 feet in length. The tunnel was used as a passage for the great Western Railway system up until about 1915. The tunnel provided passage under the third Welland Canal." source: http://www.helloni...e_ghost_tunnel.php (and various books that I have that I'm too lazy to scan and post.)

No need to be a dick about it. I was only offering my best estimate as I knew there was no way it was a kilometer long, let alone was the flooded section that far in.

| | | Well even if this tunnel is not hat it's cracked up to be. It is still exponentially a better adventure than the "Screaming Tunnel". The Screaming Tunnel is probably the most overrated paranormal-location here. Long story short, I'd definitely go check this tunnel out. Anyone want to join?

| | | Some of you canal nerds ought to find this interesting. A 112-page booklet on the history of the St. Lawrence Seaway, issued a couple of years ago by the Canadian Management Corporation on the occasion of their 50th anniversary... http://www.greatla.../pdf/Jenish_en.pdf Starting around page 31 (or thereabouts) is an overview of the history of the Welland Canal and its related infrastructure. And starting at page 67 is a description of the failure of lock 7 in 1985 and the subsequent rehabilitation of the entire canal. Pretty interesting stuff if you're into large-scale civil engineering projects, as I am.
It's great to be alive! |
