| | 1950's service station < on 2/10/2011 12:17 AM >
| | | Still stuck in southeast Arkansas, can't work today due to the snow, so rather than hang out in the motel, went looking for something to explore. Probably not a good idea, as it was cold, snowing, and windy. I did find this little item, an old service station built late 40's, early 50's. Supposedly it was an active station until the early 80's, then became a general mechanic shop, then a boat repair shop, then oblivion.
Your standard utilitarian building constructed from brick with facilities for two gas pumps and two service bays, one with a lift. Probably looked pretty good in its early days.
Back when the service stations had free air and water.
I never could understand why someone would paint brick. Do they think it will look better or something?
A psuedo self portrait at the entrance.
The "front office" which as expected, was also utilitarian.
Lead paint, the stuff dreams are made of....
More office...
I checked....no dial tone.
Old black and white boob tube.
View to the service bays with an old air hose.
The "throne room" Sadly, its cleaner than some active stations I've been in.
The super sanitary rolling tower and the GOJO dispenser.
The "Streamliner", made in Chicago, Illinois (Pat Pending)
More randomness...
Ah, when they used to wash your windows, check your oil, tire pressure, and pump your gas.
The tire repair area. Looks like somebody stole something. The green paint looks original. It's about an 1/8 inch deep compared to the surrounding paint.
The Service bays with the remnants of a lift.
Exit stage left.

| | | Really cool! What impressed me the most was seeing the old, disintegrating maps still in their Citgo holder. I wish you'd pulled one out to see what the date on it was. By the way, the CITGO name was introduced in 1965. These sorts of sites aren't too uncommon, but I'm certainly glad that yours wasn't sealed-up & that you took the time to document it & share it with us. I don't want to hijack your work, but here's a kind of similar spot that I found a couple months ago in Fredonia, Arizona on what's not a dirt-road leading to nowhere but I guess at one time was a main thoroughfare connected to the major city of Page, Arizona. I wish I could see what detritus is entombed within.

| | | Yeah, the Citgo was definitely newer than the building. I found some Citgo 2 cycle outboard stuff as well, so I'm assuming it was related to the boat repair business which was the last thing in the building at least according the the local who passed me the info.

| | | That's an awesome old station. I wonder if anything is still inside. The more remote, the more likely.
