| | | Abandoned F-15 carcass near Anchorage < on 2/9/2011 3:58 AM >
| | | Was out mapping the back roads of Ft Richardson a few months back for Waze, when I stumbled on a gutted F-15 just chilling in a small clear cut area. I imagine it was put there for some sort of training exercise. I haven't been back recently as my Legacy doesn't do great in deep, unplowed snow. The location is on the military base so access is a little tricky for civilians. I've held off on telling anyone about it as there is enough left to take off of it, and I really hate scavengers. Anyway, here are some pics I took.

| | | I looked up the tailcode, and it's last reported use was as an aircraft battle damage repair bird (used to train maintenance troops how to quickly repair damage & get the plane mission-ready again) there at Elmendorf AFB, which is adjacent to Ft Richardson. /-/oolie

I was about to make a comment on how stupid that website is and how (atleast for here) has nothing but abandoned streets and/or totally not abandoned 'ghost towns'.. although according to the link Alaska is awesome.. edit 1:
nevermind... Kennecott looks awesome though.... edit 2: nevermind.. once more upon looking it up its a National Park. stupid website.

| | | Yeah, ghosttowns.com is crap. For Alaska, half the towns on the list either never existed or have been reduced to one or two foundations, and the other half are still inhabited tourist traps. They don't list any actual ghost towns with interesting stuff left, like Portage or Cleary. I've said it before, but you can find more ghost towns just by looking over a USGS topo map for townsites and comparing to aerial photos for signs of activity/decay. I reccomend http://mapper.acme.com/ as a pretty good one. If anyone wants suggestions for ACTUAL Alaska ghost towns, I know of a few.

| | | This plane and related clearing look as if they were set up for an aerial attack target practice. Any comment on the evidence supporting or busting that hypothesis?

Kennecott is awesome, national park or no. Go on a crappy day and it'll likely be tourist-free. However, this is likely to change if the rumors are true that a proper bridge will be built to let vehicles cross into McCarthy and a tourist resort is built in town. The entire character of that area will change completely and irrevocably.

| | | Heyyy! It's the jet I work on! An F-15C model. With the way the Air Force works, they probably forgot it was there. It was probably cannibalized for all of its parts after it failed a depot or phased inspection for frame damage. The cold up there does some serious damage to the strength of the frames. That and corrosion probably runs rampant up there. Cool find though.
