Anyone interested in draining in the Chicago area? I am still doing research, but no matter what, I'm gonna need some fellow drainers to make it safe. Winter draining is especially dangerous, so this might be a future thing, but I just wanna gauge the interest as of now...

Any takers?

Most of Chicago's drainage system consists of an interceptor system that feeds a deep rock tunnel network. No outfall to a sunny day downstream just deeper and deeper underground with long drop shafts and real time control gates to lock you in.

Its as close to a labyrinth of death as a drainage system can be.

Good luck.

Chicago Deep Tunnel

GFL getting in. Parts of it were probably doeable 5 years ago when the new sections were still being drilled but as previously-mentioned, it's full of water now. Not gonna happen.

To be fair during a long period of little to no rainfall those tunnels would be pumped dry-ish.

But there is something underground thats doable in the area. I'm not going to tell you what or where it is, but know that there is at least one drain there thats not only possible, but should be pretty cool to see. I hope you don't beat me too it.

If it was mine, it would have been shot with a cell phone. I only know the photographer from the TARP project. I should have specified that.

The company I worked for at the time was working on some of the data acquisition hardware for water level monitoring and valve system.

Most of my access is related to ham radio some how. A lot of people donate space for ham radio repeaters and I'm known around as a tower climber, so I get into interesting places to install them. There's actually money budgeted in the DHS budget for ham radio repeaters.

Since they had to put me back together with screws after a fall, I don't climb anymore. My arms don't move quite right anymore.

The fall was relatively minor. I was working on a network switch and the deck of the pallet rack I was standing on gave way because the idiots that built it, cut the boards too short.

I drove myself to the hospital. Just enough to do serious damage and require surgery to pin my shoulder back together.

I like how you make it sound like you fell, looked at yourself, yawned, and were like "damn, well, guess I better go take care of this" then sighed grumpily and walked off.

I love checking out the Chicago threads, when I lived in Chicago a couple years ago I wasn't really into this kinda stuff then. Sadly. My idea of UE back then was going wreckdiving in Lake Michigan when it wasn't frozen. There's so much cool stuff there I remember driving past that I wish I had checked out, though.

That's probably not to far off from the truth.

I got up and saw my right arm was in the totally wrong place, so I put it back (OUCH!) and went back to work. Then it was in the wrong place again, so I decided that maybe I should have this looked at.

If I ever have to access that switch again, they are going to dismantle and move that pallet rack before I touch it. They refuse to move it? Call closed - unsafe work environment.

Funny thing is that the company sent another guy out to finish the job and he fell through the same "Burmese Tiger Trap" I fell through. He got cut up and bruised real bad, but nowhere near as seriously injured as I did.

Sounds like viable grounds for a lawsuit...

Oh, whoops sorry, I'm in California now. That's just how everyone thinks out here. =P

So, the drains in Chicago; after they go deeper and deeper and go through all the control gates, where do they GO? where do they end up? Filtered into Lake Michigan?

The system is also a CSO so AFAIK, if doesn't drain directly to the lake. Currently a Quarry is serving as a holding area and apparently the system is large enough to hold water after a storm until water treatment plants can process it.

Yeah they pump it back up to the treatment plants. In a crazy heavy rainfall event the cso can still be released into the lake though.
