I found this place while in Pittsburgh on Christmas. I had been a little nervous about posting in here but decided its time to show and see what you guys think. I appreciate any comments and advice offered as I am still learning the photography. I hope you enjoy my pics.

Welcome and thanks for posting!

You should only be nervous posting here if you reside in the Northeast...

You probably won't know what that means for a while.

Annnnnyway, that's a cool location. I'd like to see more of it. My bit of advice is to invest in a tripod - and use it - and make sure you keep your horizon (virtual or real) level. Just remember to always be patient and take your time.

Thanks, I have one but a few of the spots were narrow to the point of it not being much use, or I couldn't get it to set right on the floor. Im working on that, my biggest issue right now seems to be lighting. I have more pics of this place I can post later.

i agree with that. Since getting a t1i i havent really used my tripod much. In dark spaces instead of flash, you can just take a longer exposure and it comes out less bland. For example.

This shot is no flash, just ISO 100

For comparison, this is that same room with my old point and shoot

The room was just as dark when i took that first shot, as the first trip with my point and shoot.

Also, i hate getting a great shot, and then when i look at it full size its not level. That another tripod benefit. I just bought a Vivitar tripod from staples for $25. Its a solid investment.

I have a tripod, just was a little tough maneuvering it in some placed here, I know about setting exposure time, and I havent used my flash in a while, I have a Nikon d3000 and I have only been able to set it to 30 second exposure, although I could have sworn others have set it longer. I bought the camera used and didn't get an owners manual with it. The example you showed was the reason I bought the Nikon instead of stinking with the POS I started with.

What's the point in stating the actual name of the place here? Seems unnecessarily dumb.

that literally made me laugh.
the NE forum is definitely NOT for the thinned skinned or faint of heart.

to the OP, neat place!
whats that directly across the street in the bottom roof shot?

in the second exterior I thought I spotted the PECK building by the 30th street station in Philly and was all "hell yeah" for a sec. but then I read Pittsburgh.

good luck.

you'll get plenty of advice here. (including some you wont want and some you shouldn't take)

If? you wanna take better pics here is the best place to start:
http://support.nik...igital-photography

read it!

also, in order for you to achieve longer exposures that 30seconds you're going to need a remote such as this : http://www.bhphoto...SA/Nikon_4730.html or http://www.bhphoto...3_N80_Pro_UHF.html if ya have some extra coin.

You can defeat the flash on a point and shoot even though the tiny sensor won't get as much light as a APS-C sized sensor

Bulb will allow you to shoot indefinitely as long as you hold the release. I will be absolutely mind-blown if Nikon disabled a bulb-mode in the d3000. From my my brief toying with with one it did seem like they had made the interface kinda simplistic

Yeah, its an interesting place, I stumbled onto it looking for other places and thought it was something else. Thankfully a local homeless person gave a rundown of this place.

Thanks, Im working at figuring it out, I was trying to practice with it in manual at the time. I may go reshoot using the flash next time Im down there unless I get a list of places between now and then.

I know, I was surprised at how intact a lot of those were. This place was interesting because it is relatively intact still
