Have AvChat access the server for those people who don't do IRC, and allow those of us who are IRC fans to join the room at the same time. This could be rather easily done.

| | | | Nah. I really don't want the hassles of running an IRC server. This is a message board, not a chat room. AvChat provides minimum chat functionality, and it gets some use. A real chat room means the need for ops and stuff, and it's not worth the time.

It's hard, yes. However there are dozens of ready-made IRC clients out there, Irssi being my personsl favourite.
One word argument against IRC: netsplit.
Only on crappy servers. The one I administrate has an uptime of 18 months :>

Anyway, Java sucks, and so does ActiveX. I don't want people on this website to be forced to install unknown clients just to get on the chat. Flash is an exception because it's ubiquitous.
