| | | Any half-or full-mask respirator from a legitimate safety company is capable of blocking asbestos. Any filter for said respirator that includes P100 protection (particulates) filters asbestos. Just be sure everything is NIOSH approved, and take good care of it. Oh, and none of the dinky little paper masks can filter it out, you need a real respirator.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too! |

Yeah they do limit your vision allright but think of the effect when someone turns around the corner and bumps into you with a full face on. Must scare them to hell the first seconds

| | | I love fullface respirators, it is what I own. I use it becuase it eliminates splashback in a chemical environment and you don't have to wear safety glasses while wearing a fullface. Sidenote, while you are not using your respirator, store the cartridges in an airtight plastic bag. This is because while air passes through the carts, it degrades the filtering capabilities. Also, preform a check on the seals on a regular basis. Cracked seals provide NO protection. And finally, make sure you clean them after a use. Take the resp apart and clean in a solution of dishsoap and warm water. Then use one tablespoon of bleach in one gallon of water to rinse. Let it air dry and reassemble. This will keep your resp looking and feeling new. [last edit 4/27/2004 4:20 PM by BigPoppaMikey - edited 1 times]

| | | I was wondering if you can somehow clean the cartriges, I have taken them apart before, and put in new activated charcoal, and glued them back toghter , ( being careful to ensure a proper seal), as the cost can be .....a bit much. any ideas? I have use paper from water filtration systems for the paper part of the element to, and am wondering if there is a beter way to rebuild them or clean them. and yes my full face may be more difficult to wear, but the shock value is better, as well as protection. p.s. chemical military "bunny" suits are cool to!!!! I love mine, takes the itch out of assbestos. [last edit 4/27/2004 8:53 PM by SteamPunk - edited 1 times]

| | | I absolutely agree with BigPoppaMikey. I regularly work in a toxic chemical environment as well and use the full face respirator. Additionally, ensure you have the proper cartridges for the toxin you suspect. You can get information from the place you buy them or at the OSHA website in the USA. For ensuring you have a good seal between the mask and your face, for men, facial hair can cause a bad seal. Also, when you put the mask on, put your hands over the filter inlets and try to deeply breath in. The mask should collapse down on your face and it should feel like no air is coming in. This brings me to a question: How do you various groups and individuals deal with the danger of low oxygen levels or the possibility of carbon monoxide? (I guess this is where good planning and research come in?)

| | | I thought about my question last night and I remembered something from my last job. For those exploring mine shafts or any underground space that may have a suspect atmosphere there are oxygen monitors and other detectors available that can be lowered in with a rope and retrieved. Lastly, make sure you have an approved flash light that is explosion proof.

| | | One more thing: If you are going into a really badly asbestos contaminated area as in penetrating a plastic sealed area, you may want to consider getting some disposable tyvac suits. They are made of some sort of heavy weight paper and have booties and a hood all you need is golves and the respirator. (I would wear goggles too.) Bring a garbage bag and then trash everything but the gloves and respirator. THis is for the ultra "Hard Core" types only.

| | | ultra what.?....... got new multi gas-multi vapor p100 carts for my full face 3m mask, that was greatfully given to me, the tyvek suit is usually in my bag, has great shock value, makes it look like you might work there, but is so damn white!! i also carry a back pack cover, it is for the rain, and may help. i was looking at pricing in a cat at work, and these things, full face masks, detectors, aside from the tyvek suits, are quite costly. the oxy det could be useful for mine exp. i got this multi- gas vapor p100 cart, is there anything that i should still be aware of, something i missed?
