Old guy I use to work with said there was a "sorta" ghost town near the NC/SC boarder along I-85. He said it was a Mill town that had closed in the 70's and just dried up. He and his wife were riding around, and came across it. Said the whole time they were there they only saw one house that was occupied on the entire Mill Hill. I have yet to find it, anyone ever hear of something similar? It must be near Bessemer City, which still has a operating Drive in for those interested, its something to experience and is cheap.

Alot of semi ghost towns there. The mills are all gone, and when the mills left so did half or more of the population.

You might be thinking of several towns, each named after one of the man who founded the mills and towns daughters. They are beyond shelby on 74 west right on the SC border. They are, Caroleen, Henrietta, Avondale and Cliffside. Cliff must have been the ugly daughter but it is a milltown.

Caroleen and Avondale are actually good places to live for someone like me, theyre cheap, but most of Henrietta has burnt down or rotted away and whats left is white trash ghetto.

The towns are just sort of vacant, but the mills and other buildings are abandon and lot of fun.

The nightmare corpse-city of R'lyeh…was built in measureless eons behind history by the vast, loathsome shapes that seeped down from the dark stars. There lay great Cthulhu and his hordes, hidden in green slimy vaults.

That sounds awesome. We should get our group together and make plans to visit some of these.

My daddy was a Research Chemist in Old Fort, NC at the Old Fort Finishing Plant. The plant closed.....geez....in the mid to late 80's when United Merchants went tits up. Is the plant still there? I've been back through there (we lived in the Mackey's Creek subdivision) but didn't pay any attention to the mill and it's been probably 7 years since I've been that way. Anyway, I grew up in that area and know it pretty well. I'm down for hiking if there is an exploration of an abandoned town in the offing.

Lost Cove is an interesting ghost town along the NC/TN border. Apparently the town petitioned for a road years ago, to which the state replied no. As the railroad industry in the town died off, families were left in this town with no outside access and eventually all moved away (last resident left in the late '50s). The town was left standing abandoned for years, and several of the original structures still remain though many were destroyed by fires alledged to have been started by careless teenagers.

Here's a link to some more info on it, if interested.
