Boise Area Bombshelters

Hey all! I am trying to catalog all of the bigger bomb shelters that exist in downtown Boise and the North End.

1.The building that used to be the downtown Macy's has a pretty good sized one in its basement.

2.Boise High also has a good one in the steam tunnels that run under the school.

3. There is also a bomb shelter built into the foothills near the Armory building that I believe is now used by the Boise School District for off-site records storage.

Does anyone know of any other good ones in the area? Are any of them still intact?

The best thing about that shelter is when you go there, and you look at the outside, you think to yourself that there is no way in hell that it would EVER take the impact of any type of bomb let alone a nuke. You can mill around in side anytime you want, just don't screw with anything in there. The bands there aren't afraid of beating you to death for messing with their stuff. Its worth checking out.

There was one I explored a couple years back on an abandoned farm off Overland between Linder and 10 mile. I never got a pic, but it was discovered, photoed, and inventoried by the Ada County Historical Preservation Council. It was about 12x20 ft with an arched ceiling and you had to go down some stairs enclosed by a wooden structure and make a turn into the room. The metal door was missing and it was converted into a root cellar.

The farm and shelter are gone now.

Interesting. Living here my whole life, its sad to see what goes due to overcrowding from California. Most people on here would be interested to know that most buildings dt were abandoned as well. There used to be a hotel and an insurance firm from the 50's above the blues bouquet down town abandoned til about 10 years ago with all the original stuff.. Its still abandoned but was renovated in hopes to sell it.

If you guys are interested in the Boise downtown and what happened there during the 60s and 70s, I had to write a fairly extensive paper about a mall that never got built down there and the result was most of downtown being a vacant lot for 15-20 years. I could see if I could upload a pdf here so you guys could check it out. Mind you, I wrote it about six or seven years ago during my first tour of duty through BSU but it is decent read if you're into that kind of thing.

Thanks for all of your replies on this topic, Cold War era stuff, especially bomb shelters are a particular interest of mine. I have heard about the shelter being used as a recording studio but have never been there. May have to check it out soon.

Something else to keep in mind about many bomb shelters; very few were actually capable of withstanding and protecting people from a nuclear blast. Many bomb shelters were there more to comfort the public rather than protect them. It's kind of like the "duck and cover" drills they held in the 60s, purely psychological crutches that the government used to make it look like they were doing something rather than throwing their hands up and telling the populous, "If we get hit by a bomb, most of you are screwed."

If you want to see a shelter that was designed to house most of the heads of our government, do a search for the GreenBrier Resort or just follow this link:

http://en.wikipedi...oject_Greek_Island

It was decommissioned for use after a news article was written that detailed its existence in 1992 and then it was opened as a museum a few years ago. I would have given my left nut to be able to get into that bunker before it was turned into a tourist trap.

That bomb shelter is pretty neat to check out. It's pretty big too, I wonder around there occasionally when my friends bands are practicing. You can also get on the roof by climbing up the side.

It's interesting to research old documents put out by university cooperative extensions for farm structures. There are plans for "bomb" shelters that date from the 50's and 60's. There is no way these structures would withstand a vicinity blast. The shockwave would destroy most underground shelters and that little air vent to the surface? Basically a simple flue. If the blast didn't suck out the oxygen, the radiation will seep in eventually.

Duck *swish!* and cover! The Atomic Caf e is a good documentary for anyone interested in the cold war.

There happens to be a bomb shelter in my neighborhood. They put it in the side of the hill behind them. They take care of it too. Painted the door, at least, just last year.

Atomic Cafe is a friggin' sweet movie! I show it to my students every year and all of them look at me like a nut when I sing along with the Bert The Turtle/Duck N Cover song.
