So AdolfHipster and I were bored. We were thinking of what we could do on a Saturday night and all of the sudden I was like, I wanna climb some shit. After a little brainstorming we decided to climb this grain elevator. Here's our quest to reach the stars.(sorry if there a little blurry it was windy as hell up there)

We found a large tape measure with a lead weight attached to the end on one of the cat walks. Turns out we were 116 feet in the air haha. Truly an amazing experience, I'm glad you talked me into it. The maze of catwalks and ladders was so extensive - we spent 2 hours or so up there and didnt walk on half the cat walks. On the main structure we found a large room (#11 #13) that was fun to explore and a nice way to get warm (it was about 29 degrees and windy as hell). Can't wait for spring to try it again!

I was up that many years ago. Same stuff, got bored and climbed the elevator.

That one is cool because of all the assorted conveyors.

I had thought of borrowing their little yellow locomotive for a ride around their yard, but never got around to actually doing it.

lol that would probably be a bad idea. Cops drive by there a lot, in fact one flipped on his lights near by and kind freaked us out until we saw he was pulling someone over.

Been there many times. I don't think the cops ever bothered us. Not even the time we were blowing off fireworks in the parking lot.

That area is unincorporated so the only cops are sheriff's deputies and state troopers.

Come to think of it, if you drive East out of their parking lot, there's a paved road that goes East from the highway. About a mile down that road is a group of houses that used to be a town until it just about got wiped off the map by an F5 tornado.

One afternoon hanging out and getting ready to climb the elevator some guy rolls in the parking lot and starts talking with us. Turns out he owned the grain elevator in the town which got totaled by the F5 tornado. We hung out for a while and then we went over to his place and he was showing us before and after pics of the town and letters he got from people hundreds of miles away that found stuff from his grain elevator in their yard.

That was one of the more interesting exploring days.

Wow thats amazing, any sense of how long ago that happened? We were looing at the nevada elevator (the town, not the state) for something to check out as well. It looks like it may be some fun. Aside from those theres not many that look very exciting.

BTW Radio2006 where are you located?

The F5 tornado happened June 13, 1976.

I'm about half way between Des Moines and Carroll.

Well why didn't you tell me about this site sooner? You just gotta find people like me that are crazy and ambitious enough to get out and do it. It also helps that I deliver all over Iowa which helps me find leads.

Yeah I've drove by it before but forgot about it until you said something. Was there anything worth seeing?

I also deliver shit for a living, and that reminds me LaughingMan, I saw a sweet grain elevator off highway 20 in Duncombe today, and there appears to be a couple small abandonments by Zearing that may be worth checking out sometime.
