And the place has been mentioned about a bajillion times on here as well as having it's innards displayed all around flickr, Spacing/Torontoist/BlogTO/insert-trendy/hipster/urbanist-ezine/newsletter/blog-here. To coin a phrase "It's the new Brickworks".

Why do people even care that much? What exactly is the worst that can come out of this "overexposure"? They lock Hearn up again like they did after the explorer died there? It's not like it's the end of the world if such a thing happens. Besides, people will tire of it soon enough - Hearn was a big thing back when I got started here in 2005, and it lost popularity fairly soon afterwards until recently. It's just like how Tower Automotive was a big thing at the start of this year - by February-ish most people had forgotten about it again. It'll happen with Hearn as well again.
And to kowalski - if people want to go there to take the "same" photographs (or UE "tourism", as you call it and refer to here), why do you even care? If you're sick of looking at the same photos - stop looking at them. If you're trying to change the community for what you see as being better, get down off the soapbox because that isn't going to do anything - people will do what brings them enjoyment, and if that is "UE tourism" then so be it. Trying to challenge them as you are makes you pretentious and look like an ass.

| | | Actually I don't find UE tourism boring at all. My point was that I think it's selfish to widely and blatantly publicize by name the places we've been, especially with an attitude of "I've already been there so why should I care if it gets closed up now?". (This is only more annoying when it's accompanied by "I was there 3 years ago when it was cool and now it's a shell of its former self"). And no, UER is not the only place this happens. All I'm suggesting is that we don't have to add to the slop. @Kowalski, the overexposure is not "courtesy of photographers like me" because my Flickr photos are untagged and are largely viewable by friends only, AND because I've never been to Hearn (nor will I ever go).

| | | That blogTO photo is mine. Is Hearn overdone? Sure. But, most of us are just doing this to enjoy ourselves. So who cares if it's the same 5 shots over and over? If the person exploring is having fun, then not much else really matters. Just don't click on the thread.

+1 I'd never been, and I always wanted to hit Hearn so guess what I did? I fucking went. I could care less if someone went there in 1986. I don't have time for elitist bullshit. Over and out.

But we can be informed without being lectured or subjected to asshole-like comments. I think that's everyone's point here. You can steer them in the right direction for more information on its history, future plans, etc...without the attitude. [last edit 11/24/2010 5:58 PM by Neil T - edited 1 times]

| | | People get mad at me because the 'community' on this forum has, in the space of six years, forgotten how to engage in self-reflection and criticism of the broader ethics (that is, not the usual performances about stealing and damage), the responsibilities, and the possibilities and ambitions of 'urban exploration'. Back in the first years of the 21st century, we did these things occasionally, even on UER. Now it's just "let me take the photos I want to take," and "don't ruin my fun," and bullshit cries about "elitist bullshit." Yes, some of the things I say are as inciting as they are insightful, but these are interventions that are desperately needed even if I'm 'doing it wrong'. Even the internet is bored with 'urban exploration'. Judging by this thread, even some of you are bored with 'urban exploration', though you're wrapping it intentionally or unintentionally in this concern about 'exposure'. Sure, you can go off and have your own, private bits of 'fun' (we used to call that masturbation). I have nothing to say about that. But when you choose to participate in a big forum of people, when you maintain your own photo websites, and when you start worrying about what photos are being posted to what mainstream websites and what other people are doing ---- the TES crew for instance, and if there was ever cause for cries of 'elitism' it would be this Ontario forum's long history of denigrating TES participants for doing basically the same thing you lot have been doing, just with less 'style' or something ---- you're entering into a social contract in which you do have a responsibility to consider the value, content and contribution of your actions and your practice and your work to the big community and society you live in. You can ignore that responsibility all you want, but you're shortchanging not only your community but yourselves by doing so. [last edit 11/24/2010 7:06 PM by kowalski - edited 1 times]

| | | Alright, so this has become interesting. But not really the place for it. This thread is about hearn, not about whats wrong with the ue community or the theory of ue tourism and elitism. And to everyone the that is not kowalski...him and I may not be known to get along, but I have to say, lay off him here, he made some valid and good points. No this thread isn't the place for such points, another thread for it should probably be started, but whatever, you can't complain about that when you go and turn this into a trash kowalski thread. Can people just make and effort to get along for one thread? Why don't we rename the thread and look at some of the photos here...or not look at them...whatever makes you happy?
