I get it. There's no law. Burn it for all I give a fuck.
If you took the time to take it, bring it home, scan it, then return it, but don't give a shit what it says then that's your right, but man really?
All good.

Sorry hedkace! I didn't mean to be so cold in tone and belligerent in words. I was just steamed about being told to fuck off when I replied. It really was simply a case of scanning and posting the letter prior to taking the time to digest it. I was more in a hurry to share it than to dissect it's contents.

I think posting an old 1836 document has tons more social value

For a bunch of random idiots on the internet to whom it means nothing and who have no capacity to do anything with it? The suggestion to take it to the local historical society is at least one good thing that's come out of this thread, apparently in this case the internet is at least > than your own lack of imagination.

I do know that reverse psychology saved me having to type out a translation of the letter.

Don't kid yourself, I was already working on it.

And if you don't feel justified to explore abandonments, maybe your reading the wrong forums.

I feel justified doing what I do (though plenty of self-reflection has gone into working that out). I'm asking you, a person who apparently has no impulse to even learn anything from what they're doing, let alone to think about what it could mean for anyone else, what makes you feel justified engaging in completely selfish, unthinking behaviour.

Why should you have the right to trespass, remove things from a property, and whatever other transgressions you may have perpetrated along the way? Selfish desire to see things isn't a terribly good answer for that question, especially when your desire to see things is so weak that you can't even be bothered to try to decipher what you're seeing. That there's a forum on the internet where you can post context-free photographs and scans in order to earn short-lived, insipid praise from your fellows isn't great justification either.

Why should anyone in the community where you tramped through a supposedly abandoned house and from which you removed this letter accept / respect / tolerate / be interested in what you're doing? Why should they be satisfied that your transgressions against the law are not transgressions against them?

Just going to put this out here... What the fuck?

Why are you guys giving this kid such a hard time for scanning a document and not reading it right away? Did you honestly just decide that it's "be a fucking douche-tard day"? Cause I didn't get the memo.

Give him a break, stop being stupid fucks who think they are the best shit since sliced bread, and let this shit go? Kay? Cool.

Hmm... this is interesting. Why do you think that 'Ammoclip' is a kid, or should be addressed that way?

Because I refer to a lot of people as kid, guy or "hey you with the hair". Any other problems with my reply?

+1

At the very least this guy took something, said he was going to return it and actually scanned it so he (probably) wouldn't keep it. Others here get berated for taking shit, then keeping it. If something is taken from an abandonment, and it's just going to rot, that's still better then people stealing documents/stuff from active locations to say nothing of assholes who steal from archives and libraries.

Is it for the address that you found it in?

I took a little time and found http://qpublic4.qp...wson&search=parcel.

This allows you to search lots based on their parcel number. There was no results for the number 395. They have likely changed the numbering method or previous lot numbers since the creation of this document. The county I found it in was Dawson, but maybe the person that used to occupy the location brought it with them when they moved.

The number 395 will likely be the original land lot number from the Cherokee Territory lottery of 1832 (the legal sleight of hand that created a foundation for the violent, forced expulsion of the Cherokee Nation to the Western U.S. by criminals like Jackson and Van Buren). It is definitely from Lumpkin County.

If you went to the main library in Lumpkin County they would probably have the original maps of these lot lines. Your local library might even have a whole book of these maps for all ten Georgia counties that were created out of the Cherokee territory.

I agree, all he was doing was going out of his way to take and later return the document just so he could scan it to show us an interesting document from the 1800's. I thought it was cool.

What the...

Ok, this is a pretty sweet document, it's cool that you found and rescued it. I agree with whoever said to take it to a historical society. They should be able to preserve and display it properly.

What is an explorer?

What's the social value of what you're doing? Why should you feel justified to be there fucking around in that attic and taking things from it?

WOW!! You sound like the looters in Atlas Shrugged, whining about the "social value" of everything. Fuck the social value, what are you, his overseer?

Nothing better to do then complain about the activities of others which don't meet up to your personal criteria? Aw shucks, thats too bad isn't it?

You might want to pay closer attention to your analogies; if there's a looter in this thread it's certainly not me. Either way, since you appear to be of the school that believes that all things can be explained via Galtian nonsense, maybe you can tell us where the Innovators are in urban exploration, and how the tedious morass of a thousand people looking here for their daily praise fits with whatever it was that Rand was on about.

Urban explorers operate like leeches, suckling at places that mean something to other people until nothing remains but six hundred boring photographs of dust and wreckage and pointless chairs. I would imagine that Rand would have been just as unimpressed with this self-aggrandizing but utterly pointless recreational tourism as she was with everything else that didn't fit into her dreamwish of a bright, shiny future ruled by her triumphant robber barons.

I don't come on here much mainly because of this holy roller attitude from people, who think that they have more "social value", better morals, or a truer sense of justice then someone else.

To be frank kowalski you got your point across in the first post. To be frank, I am glad he scanned it and you took the time to dig up the history/add something to his find. Not all urban explorers are here to beat the wagon of the perfect photo, or the exposure of history. Some of us do it because its more fun then sitting at home watching the tube. In that respect I think you should be a bit more civil with people in your community on here.

Ammoclip I will be shunned, but I would either take every piece of old paper out if need be, or better yet contact the local historical society/old folks home and tell them what someone told you was in there. Just be like, "Hey I heard there a are a bunch of old news articles, papers from the late 1800s into the early 1900s in this abandoned house. You guys might wanna see if you can get permission to remove the items before they are destroyed."

P.S. Thanks for know the difference between a clip and a magazine, which I am sure Kowalski has not interest in, but a firearms enthusiast would think he was a idiot for not knowing.

Funny you should turn my comparison in one nature into what you see as a proclamation I've supposedly made to see the world through those eyes. To tell the truth, I only wish I were capable of seeing so clearly.

I think it's pretty amazing that you know the mind of Rand (a dead person) so well that you can speak for what she would or wouldn't have felt about something.

Did you real all 1074 pages of Atlas Shrugged, without skipping through the "boring" parts, reading every single word, and understanding every concept? Or did you read which parts you wanted to read, and all of it not accepted with an open mind to see if what's said is plausible, but only how it clashes with your own views?
I've read it right around 10 times since I was 13 years old, and every single time I take something more from it. Something I didn't catch before. As I evolve mentally through my life, I pick up more interesting pieces from it. It becomes difficult not to see the things she spoke of, happening in todays world. But then, I'm reading it with an open mind, because I can't claim to already have all the answers in life.

Personally, I couldn't care less for abandoned houses. But for him, it was something special. It was something fascinating and real. That he took the time to copy it, and to share with friends, with the original intent of replacing it; I think is quite contrary to what most would conceive in terms of "looting". However, he was instead given the opinion of turning it over, instead of replacing it back where it came from.

Not all urban explorers will follow the same path. Not all of them have the same opportunities. And frankly, if they all only did what YOU thought was "great", then on who's terms would they be living? To whose goals and standards would they be achieving towards?

If you don't give a fuckall for each person's own enjoyment through exploration, why are you even here?

While I can't profess to completely understand Rand's philosphy; what I do understand of it doesn't portray excluding one's own joys and pleasure in order to live according to the values of others, or of whoever else's is loudest or the most controlling.
Should everyone conform to the same belief in all the exploring they do (your belief) so that what they post has merit in your eyes? To please you?

Or should they explore what they want, when they want, and find joy in whichever simple things work for them, according to their own values?

I can't tell you how many uninspiring things I've seen on here. But I'm not gonna run around absolutely trashing everyone just because they find beauty or intrigue in things which I can't perceive the same way. That's for THEM to decide.

You know Kowalski, something else you said just struck me.

About the proliferation of the same places, same material.

Not everyone is going to experience the same thing at the same time. And not everyone browses through every single entry on the forum before they post material. That people post the same things of the same places seems more like a "oh hey! yeah we've been there too!" not a "what the FUCK is wrong with you? everyone's already been here, noone gives a shit for seeing your shitty photos of the place, why would you even GO there?".

You see the difference at all? It's perception. Depends on how you look at things. People who look at everything with negative perception will tend to see fault in all things which aren't their own view of how things should be.

If everyone were a mirror of you, or me... this would be a fucking terrible planet to live on.
Even if 100 people visited the same location, one at a time, one day after another, yeah, the pictures would get repetitive and old. But I think different people would see the place in different ways, would give a different view on the same place, when shown what it looks like through THEIR eyes with their pictures. And noone should be exempt for the enjoyment, just because others have already been there and seen the same thing.

If value is only given by who's there FIRST, then how devalued should you feel at all the places YOU haven't been first, or have only been to after droves of others got there before you, whether you knew it at the time or not?

Lighten up dude.

The genesis of this document may be liked to the forced removal of the Cherokee people from thier lands.

If I am interpreting it correctly, the contract refers to a parcel of land in the "fourth district of the first section of Cherokee county which is now Lumpkin county" then goes on to identify lot#395.
You can find lot#395 on the land lot & district map on this page (pdf.)

http://www.lumpkin...=maps&goto=gallery

If the lot numbers are still current, the location identified is located inside what was once known as Cherokee Territory. The counties were formed as a result of the Cherokee land lottery of 1832. These hills were the sight of one of the original gold rushes in US history. Europeans were looking for gold in the Americas since first expeditions, and unfortunately this discovery sealed the fate of the Cherokee Nation in this area.

http://ngeorgia.co...ory/lotteries.html

The Cherokee people were forcibly removed from their territories, forming most of the counties of Northwest Georgia. The eventual result of this was the "Trail of Tears" one of the most tragic incidents in our history.

http://ngeorgia.co...tory/nghisttt.html

Today we would refer to these acts in terms of "ethnic cleansing" and would consider indicting the people responsible for war crimes.

Interesting how this contract was signed even before the Cherokee were actually forced to leave the area.

Though I don't necessarily agree with the means by which some have criticized Ammoclip for providing this interesting item without fully reading, I think it is vitally important for us to understand these things we may find on our explorations.

Everyone has reasons for enjoying exploration, wether it's just a thrill, to take some interesting or artful images, to actually be present in a place that was once bustling with activity and then been abandoned, as a social event, or whatever.

Arent we doing ourselves a dis-service if we don't take the time to attempt to understand what it is we are actually exploring?

Again, thanks to Ammoclip for sharing this item with us, I find these things particularly fascinating and enlightening.
