"A Luftwaffe pilot who spent time there later wrote: "I am convinced that nowhere in the world did prisoners of war have better housing, better food, better recreation facilities, better educational opportunities, and above all, fairer treatment, than in Canada."

http://www.thestar...rio/article/597539

I couldn't find the reference from Hodgson's book, so this will have to do.

The "Battle of Bowmanville" was just about the only major incident involving injuries at the camp. Every reference I've seen mentions how well prisoners were treated there.

"I feel like I just got in a battle of wits with some kid in a helmet I found licking a window."

**edits after reading article**

do you think this is something that should be saved, it is part of canada's shame filled history. I guess we should not forget the past. have it there to remind us how despicable we were during the wars.

What the fuck are you talking about?

I'm sorry but what? We were at war, the Nazi party had stirred up Germany and invaded without provocation most of Europe, they slaughtered millions of people!

My Grandparents lived through the occupation of the Netherlands. They fought against the Nazi regime by harboring Jews in their own houses at the risk of their lives.

And you're saying we should be ashamed that we locked away some of their high ranking officials. Yes, this was a POW camp, not an internment camp. If you're thinking of the Canadian Internment of the Japaneses citizens of our country, yes that we should be ashamed of. But not because we housed members of the Nazi party captured by Commonwealth forces during the war.

In fact because of the way they were treated while imprisoned in Canada, many who were not accused of war crimes returned to Canada after the war to live here.

We should not forget anything our country did, for the better or the worse, for those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.
