| | Highly Recommended Coke (coal) Factory, Indianapolis < on 10/26/2010 4:48 PM >
| | | Another great Indianapolis destination. This place is a genre-defining heavy industry urbex experience: big towers, skyway gerbil tunnels with conveyor belts, massive Battle-Tech style machines on tracks, other machinery that defies description, a coke oven the size of a apartment complex, control room, gas storage tanks, dissolved metal stalactites (never seen these before), catwalks in the hundreds, and a Goliath tank and riser frame that smells like evil on a separate section. Artifacts abound and views of downtown are exceptional. Closed completely in 2007, it's still not rusty enough to be unsafe, even at heights. Be prepared to get DIRTY, and if blacklung displeases you think of bringing a light-duty respirator. Lights are a must, headlamps recommended--you'll need hands free for climbing. Took us about 5 hours to see and photograph half of the complex. This is a superfund site, meaning it's badly contaminated and is scheduled to be demolished in 2011. See it while you can, don't go alone, and see it at night. Warning: an extremely rough neighborhood surrounds the plant. I heard gun shots in the ghetto, while I was on the roof of the main tower. I can't reduce the photos enough to upload them here, so check out the "Indianapolis Coke" set below: www.flickr.com/schubertomaestro/sets Dag [last edit 10/26/2010 4:52 PM by Daguerrotypist - edited 2 times]

| | | Did you find the model? Somewhere in the plant there's a scale model of another facility. It's really impressive to see. But yeah, the coke plant is a good time, watch out for the security guard though..

| | | You can link to your images from flickr here by copying the image location of the size that you want and putting img tags around it. It's what most people do.

The neighborhood is fine, we walked around from 3am-5am and 8am-10am this summer ... no problems. Watch out for security. [last edit 10/27/2010 3:36 PM by \/adder - edited 1 times]

| | | Thanks for the tip on linking flickr photos here. We were there on a Saturday night, 9PM until 2AM. There were homeless people & their loud dogs on the RR tracks and there is a pretty run down neighborhood on two sides of the plant. The neighborhood has a high crime rate, and is quite poor. Just keep in mind when leaving your car somewhere.

| | | Well shit, looks like I'm driving to Indianapolis. Security's not bad, yes? Considering the daytime pictures I'm seeing.

| | | I live in Indy and seen this plant(from the outside) many times. Unfortunately I haven't explored any of it, just haven't found anyone to explore with yet, being new to Indianapolis. As far as security, I've only seen one guy there, so it's pretty easy to get inside unnoticed. And the neighborhood is alright, a lot better than some other places I've gone to(the area around the mental hospital can be sketchy). If you guys ever plan a visit to the plant I'd love to come along! I don't live to far from it as it is.
