So there's this old house I've noticed that looks like it would be good for a few pics. It's on the side of a road that's suburbs on one side, and barren country-land on the other (the house being on the countryside. When I went up to the gate and driveway, it was all locked up with signs saying Don't Trespass, and one saying "this property is under surveillance or something with a picture of a camera. I didn't see any cameras or anything other than power-line poles or phone poles going up to the house. Is it possible that there's cameras? or do I: need to worry?1.
taken with camera phone in case you didn't guess.

The sign said "Anybody caught trespassin will be shot on sight"
So I jumped on the fence and I yelled at the house,
"Hey! What gives you the right?" http://www.flickr.com/photos/evman/

Eh I wouldn't worry too much about those signs they are a dime a dozen 99% of the time they just put those signs up to try and scare people, unless you can actually see a camera then don't worry and even if you can the chances of it being actively monitored are pretty slim...cos monitoring costs $$$....but then again I could be wrong...

Is there an active source of electricity?

If the place has been abandoned for a while, there may be no power to run any security equipment anyway.

Cameras are only as good as the people maintaining the system, would anyone even be interested in recording security video of an abandonment?

Probably depends on location/proximity.

You could take a better image, then have an easier time assessing the potential risk.

What spike said.

If a third the signs are real, and half of those places no longer have power, and a quarter of the ones that are left are monitored (instead of recorded)... then that's a 4% chance that it's something to worry about. I'd go for it.

By the looks and sounds of it, you don't have much to worry about.

Remember that many places advertising cameras either don't have them, or they're dummy models. Even more frequently they simply don't have power. Even when a place does have cameras, it still doesn't mean you need to worry. If there is no on-site security building/station, then you're usually fine. Any existing cameras with power and without on-site security and you can be pretty sure that they're not going to be monitored, and that they're only there for playback at a later time in case something noticeable does happen and it warrants a review.

Thanks guys, that's what I thought. There's only the power line going nowhere and none of the things on it look like cameras. I think I'll give it a go.

These are obviously more recent technology, but:

Of course things like motion sensors should be a good warning to you anyway.

Take this with a grain of salt since I've never tried it--but I've heard you can use something like a cell phone camera to tell if a camera is a dummy.

When I was fixing my wii back in the day [yeah I own a wii, wanna fight about it?] the tech guy had me view the sensor bar through my cell camera. You can see the little light dots that way and normally can't otherwise.

I didn't think much of it, but recently someone told me that you can do the same thing with security cameras. If you see that dot or some other sign, again I've never done it, the camera is real.

This is true. Camera sensors like the ones on your cell phone camera can easily pick up infrared light. Do a test - take your cell camera and point it at the end of your TV remote and press some buttons. You'll notice that the LEDs (which are infrared) start blinking.

Lots of (newer) security cameras also use infrared LEDs in order to see better in lower light, like this one:

Try this.

They are relatively cheap and self powered. Heat and/or movement triggered, long battery life. IR flash.

Also, some cameras are just fake, to deter people from stealing.
