| | Odessa Catacombs < on 10/4/2010 2:14 AM >
| | | For our second stop on our vacation to the Ukraine we went to the Odessa Catacombs. When I first started researching, I had a hard time visualizing how big they actually are. They are estimated to be about 2500 km long, or as I found out, the distance between Boston and the southernmost tip of Florida. They are that massive and really maze-like. We spent two days there with Eugene and his team. They were great hosts and we had an awesome time. 1. We started out in the older section, all made from mining limestone by hand.
2.
3.
4. There were many bases set up by various exploring groups. Lots of furniture composed of limestone.
5.
6. A stable where they kept the horses used to haul out the limestone. The horses were blinded to prevent them from spooking in the winding tunnels. They put wood on the floors to insulate their hooves:
7. Part of a chainsaw left in the rocks:
8. The newer part where everything was cut out in a grid-like fashion:
9.
10. A motor pool for trains:
11. No smoking
12. It was a long way back to the surface:
13. Another part of a chainsaw left behind

| | | Here is my set for the catacombs. I would like to say that Eugene and his crew were great hosts. We brought powerbars for meals, but Eugene brought all the supplies for proper dining and shared them with us. We were prepared for the most minimal of circumstances but what he provided included tea, noodles, a loaf of bread, some spread for the bread, white chocolate, and cookies. After all he took out of his backpack I would not have been surprised if he finished with a bottle of champagne. Sufficed to say, I highly recommend exploring with him. 14. The effect of light through a window of a strongroom.
15. Stones ready to be sold from an active quarry.
16. The stone cutting machine in the active quarry.
17.
18.
19. Neophile creating new catacombs.
20. Me creating new catacombs.
21. Me driving the electric cart.
22.
23. A hundred year old graf.
24. Relics from the catacombs, mostly weapons from WWII.
25. Munitions found in the catacombs. On the left is the prize: a German potato masher.

| | | That's got to be one of the strangest (and most interesting) places I've ever seen. Great stuff! Those WWII relics would be pretty neat to find.
