If it aint rough, it aint right....
| | Great Smoky Mountains National Park/Gatlinburg < on 10/2/2010 2:13 PM >
| | | Hello everyone, from just outside of Detroit, making a trip to the Smokies/Gatlinburg in a couple of weeks. Will be with some non explorers, but wanted to get some opinions on Elkmont ghost town, as it looked very interesting. This photography trip will be different than perhaps the Detroit stuff, but it looks very good!

| | | Been there. Its excellent. Unless something Major has happened in the last year or so, well worth the trip. Its not far from Gat at all.

| | | You can drive right up to it. Oh, and travel all the roads. There are some hidden gems away from the main community. Oh, and if it looks sketch it is. There are some structures that are only still standing due to the fact that a dead tree is leaning against it. Keep that in mind. Oh and if you find em, say hey to the "midget" house, the uber 70's love warehouse and if your real nosy the 1930's stash of car parts under the house on the corner. Don't forget to pay ya respects at the graveyard.

| | | On another note: Go to Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery, they offer free tastings, the Apple Pie is the best! But dont go on a Sunday! (Cant buy in TN on Sundays!) I wish I would have seen this thread I was just in Gatlinburg over the weekend! Oh well! Also watch out for bears! When we were in Cades Cove they had a lot of camp sites closed or marked unsafe because of bear activity and we had a bear in the yard of our cabin (almost stepped in the evidence of the bear... ewww) and one run through our yard being chased by dogs...

| | | I have always wanted to see a bear while I was in Gatlinburg. But, I haven't seen any leaves turn yet, in Murfreesboro at least.

| | | a few of the trees have started but not too many! But they should start fairly soon! I am seeing a few starting to change in Knox. Although Clingmans Dome got its first snow on Monday, so pack for random weather!

| | | There's a replica Titanic. No Leo in sight, but I saw early twentieth century maids mincing about on the sign. You might want to check that out as well.

| | | Thanks for the input, guys. So, I have to ask... is zorbing worth it or should I take my $35 and spend it on some other 40 second adventure? [last edit 10/9/2010 5:29 AM by ensimismada - edited 1 times]

| | | Zorbing is AWESOME! I did it in Gatlinburg. I did the wet one and the dry one; the wet one is WAY better. I was skeptical when they first said that but it really is.
