Abbey Mills pumping station - Stratford - UK - 2010

Abbey Mills pumping station was originally built between 1865 and 1868 and was designed by engineer Joseph Bazalgette, Edmund Cooper, and architect Charles Driver. Its purpose was to pump the sewage from London's low level sewers up to the high level sewage processing plant on the Thames estuary. It is designed in a cruciform plan, with an elaborate Byzantine style, described as The Cathedral of Sewage.

It would have originally used huge steam driven beam engines which were removed during the 1930's and replaced by electric pumps, which for some reason look a lot like the Daleks from Dr. Who. The originally service platforms are all still in place and it is easily possible to see where the beam engines would have once been, one in each "corner" of the building.

I understand that the electric pumps are only now used during times of heavy rains and provide more of a back up service to the modern main pumping station a little way down the road.

I’ve never been down a sewer; it’s not that I object, it’s just that the time and place have yet to be right for me so I guess this is my pre-sewer visiting homework - seeing where it all ends up. Photography is a bit screwy in places due to the slightly eccentric lighting scheme.

That's rad. Was this a tour of some kind, or did you infiltrate the fancy shit house?

Drains, drains, drains, drains, drains.

Be careful. I think one of those green lights on the machine was set to EXTERMINATE.

Oh good, my slow clap processor made it into this thing.

That is one fancy poop plant. Great shots, I thought the weird lighting was cool.

That place is just too gorgeous for words, and all to yourself. I did the other gorgeous Victorian pumping station last weekend, Crossness. Sadly full of coffin dodgers wandering into my shots, scum, the lot of 'em!
