Therrin, mind if I ask where you're getting your map data overlay? I'm assuming since you're not from out here that all those mines are not from your personal input. Feel free to PM the details if you don't want to post specifics.

PM'd.

Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =)

I also need to get rope. I'm probably going to use prussics myself unless i end up getting an ascender by then.

Totally recommend the frog, this is what I use.

The frog is the top of the line ascending rig. applicable for big walls or places where all you ascend all day but it's not really worth it, imo, for occasionally ascending. the best set up for value is a petzl mini-traxion and tibloc. people say they shred ropes but just be careful. Prusics suck though.

I wonder if there are any mines in the upstate of SC?

I now really have the hunger for a mine. Dammit.

LOL have you been reading my posts?

I've been using a minitraxion for ascending for YEARS now, having only just gotten my Frog setup 4 or 5 months ago. You can use anything as your second piece with the minitraxion, either an ascension, a tibloc, a prussik (if you must), or whatever else. I've had my two tiblocs for several years now, they're very handy. Super light-weight too.

Having used both the minitraxion and the tiblocs for so long, I've never shredded a rope with them. HOWEVER... if you're using 3/8" line with them (which they weren't designed for), you'll almost definitely shred your ropes. Most mechanical devices (passive or active), are designed with specific rope sizes in mind. While a tibloc may work beautifully on 7/16" rope, someone will use it with 3/8" rope and then tell everyone they know that tiblocs shred lines.
This isn't the fault of the piece itself, but rather the user for not understanding the connection behind what rope sizes the gear is built for.

Those types of devices were also meant for ASCENDING under static loading. They weren't designed to catch you in a dynamic loading scenario where you have slack in the rope, and you fall or slip from a foot to several feet and the device has to stop and hold you in place. That's also a great way to shred lines with these devices, and is also what will happen to people, causing them to knock these products.

Haha no actually. I've been climbing for almost 10 years. I've picked up some stuff here and there.

Actually, I don't use it for those sorts of things haha. The frog is perfect for spelunking! Alot of caves around my area of the world have huge descents to enter. Another thing i like about the frog is that I just leave the rig on while caving and when I am ready to use it again it's quick and easy. I have never tried the other setups mentioned in this thread for ascention so I can't compare them unfortunately haha.

Ah a caver. Makes sense now. On a side note I'm going caving tomorrow for the first time in years.
