| | scouting mines & caves < on 9/28/2010 11:52 PM >
| | | Ok so really this is about abandon mines more than caves. A mine is a different animal than a cave. A cave a natural formation, typically stable and fairly safe. A mine, well, its not natural its manmade, a cavity in the ground that just shoulnt be there, and neither should you.........is what makes the mine so appealing. Its just so much fun, from searching for and locating the mine, scouting it out, entry and exploration to making it out alive. I had a few close calls in mines before, they aint safe and I dont care how many caverns you visited, its not the same. So straight to the point. I have a list of the coordinates of just about every mine working in NC. I really cant tell much with terraserver and google sat images other than if its a quarry or surface mine, or if its a mine at all (one set of coordinates pointed me to a jewelry and rock shop downtown that had the word 'mine' in its name). So you go scout it out, a GPS helps and a topo or quad map is a must, but I always work in concentric circles around the target destination. Once I find a safe insertion point, sometimes miles away, its a hike! Once I detirmine the area or what areas are clear of landowners, dogooders, or just plain out of site of anyone else, then I go in. It can take hours sometimes to find the entrances, or to determine where a closed entrance used to be. Most often I find that the entrance, in the case of an adit, they are often sealed or blasted shut. For shafts well, since I became a daddy I have a policy not to enter shafts alone, so most of the time it means game over. But more often the shaft is capped, filled with debris or full of water. I guess I just dont have time to hunt mines like I used to. But maybe others on here do. I need guys to scout out some of these mine sites. If anyone's interested I can PM you a list of mines closest to your general area. And BTW dont ask for the list, i think if that list got out, especially on this site, it be like pouring gas on a fire. Next thing ya know the state would set up a beauro of mine and tunnel closure and they'd dump foam crap down every last one of em, like Mike Rowe & dirty jobs. A mine is dangerous, I personally have seen false floors covered by sand and gravel, unstable ceilings, subsidence, unexploded and highly unstable TNT, and blocked chutes(made for rocks to slide down). There is other hazards but they arent common in this region, like poison gas and blackdamp.

| | | I am very interested. I live in Raleigh, but i'm in Charlotte often enough. I'm getting climbing gear together, so soon I'll be able to rappel and ascend.

| | | Totally cool, man. I'm probably too chicken to actually go too far inside, but I'm all about the industrial remains on the surface, if any, and providing support from topside.

There is not many mines in wake county, a few in town but good luck finding them. Back in the 90s, someone was having their yard landscaped in north raleigh, and broke through to the entrance of an old graphite mine, known as lead back in the old days, hence Lead Mine Road..lol The timbers dated to be over 150 years old, and were somehow preserved. The owner pumped out the water and I have no clue what became of it, although i suspect he either covered it back up, or its been turned into a bunker for growing certain plants. Up in Franklin co, where franklin, nash, warren all come together there exist gold mines, all the ones on my list I have explored and while the landscape is intresting, with some surface remains, I failed to find much below ground that had not flooded or caved in, and what I did find was so short it was disappointing. Most of the gold mines are not on any map at all. I know of them from my grandaddy who was in charge of logging operations up there many years ago. There also exist geologic anomalies in the region, hydro vents that brought metals and even some gemstones up to the surface. Grandaddy told me about a bulldozer falling into a sinkhole which was like a small cavern of crystaline rock. Such things arent supposed to exist here, but the location has long been forgotten and I gave up tryin to find it. The only mine I am intrested in near raleigh is up near kerr lake, a tungsten mine anther member mentioned in a posting about how to get down a 60 foot shaft. I knew someone who been there and said it was all flooded but he mentioned something about being able to see tunnels down the shaft that were dry. http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=77501 I'd be glad to give you the coordinates of this one to scout out. Right now I am looking at some mines around greensboro, but still need time to look at imagery and airel photos to figure out if its subsurface or a pit.

| | | Sweet! I've probably spent a total of 10 or 15 hours trying to research the history behind Lead Mine Rd, and I never did find anything. Do you remember where you heard about that? Because I would totally go knock on that guy's door. I did do a bunch of research on that tungsten mine after you mentioned it, and I've got the coordinates. I was thinking of getting a group together to check it out- looks like there's a good amount of stuff left at the surface as well.

got a family member that lives near the place who told me about it and showed me an old newspaper article with a picture of the mine. I doubt he give you access, as i suspect its either sealed or used as a cannibais farm.

No I dont know of any abandon "gold" mines in or around charlotte, howver, I do know of a mine system under Charlotte, but goodluck accessing it, as the entrances have long been sealed, their locations now forgotten. Its what I been told anyway, I still fantasize about finding a secret trapdoor at the bottom of a storm sewer that goes down into the mines but I might as well dream on. A employee of the city once told me the entrances were located near the stadium and another is now where a highway runs. Now there are plenty of other types of mines all around, I been down in a few of them. There was also some gold mines near Kings Mtn, and a few more up in the Uwharrees. I'll have to check my list but I dont think these are on it.

I did a bunch more googling last night (knowing that it was a graphite mine helped a lot). I didn't find any specifics except for the general area where it was, and the minutes of a local spelunking club that said they had a tour of it earlier this year- so it looks like it may be somewhat accessible. Though they said they only went back about 60 ft. I don't know if it's blocked past that point or what. They didn't elaborate.

These is a few possible subsurface mines I know of, but more than likely its just a pit filled with water. [last edit 9/29/2010 8:40 PM by ghost6 - edited 1 times]
