| | | @Ammoclip - Have you been inside any of the sites at GNAL (I have not)? The only entrance I really know of has been buried for a few years. And the rangers keep a pretty close eye on the hot cell building. @MonkeyPunchBaby - GNAL has been decommissioned for a while, and there isn't really that much to see, unless someone (or the Database) has info on a viable entrance. This page has a pretty representative sample of what you're likely to see. If you decide to come down, hit me up - I'm only 20 minutes away and can at least show you where the main stuff is (or was).

| | | That's probably for the best - I felt I ought to warn you that I don't think GNAL (which I don't think anyone really calls it anyway) is worth a 3 hour drive by itself. If you guys are around the area for a while it may be worth taking a look at, but that Flickr link really is about all there is to see; concrete pads (really the roofs of some underground facilities), a few old bridge supports, a standing building w/ high barbed fence and hella-welded doors and radiation inside (and they keep an eye on the premises), a tunnel with a literal ton of dirt on top.
I've been considering coming up for the Chattanooga event, and I just may, thanks.

| | | Chris kicker wants to hit up the subdivision in ellijay and ellijay isn't too far from dawsonville so we may make a full day out of it. I have heard there's some stuff in dahlonega so we can make a trip out it soon. [last edit 9/22/2010 4:27 PM by MonkeyPunchBaby - edited 1 times]

Oh yes! I have been exploring GNAL since the late 1980s. I can recall 3 steady underground entrances(ones that keep getting unburied). In recent years, with their focus on mountain biking and horses, they have been keeping up with covering openings more diligently and extensively. I know for a fact they monitor internet content for information on underground entrances. So let me say this, there is no current underground entrances, they have done such a wonderful job of keeping them covered that I doubt anyone will ever get in again! Now, some above ground buildings have never been sealed and are ALWAYS available. Both pump houses are available to check out. All the buildings inside the hot cell area are open except the block house(large one). The fenced in areas, will result in getting you in trouble if caught inside, or atleast an escort off the property. But since the late 1980s, i have been inside the hot cell fences countless times and I have NEVER had any trouble. I have been inside the block house before they added the steel plating over the doorways. Wasn't much to see, must be sealed due to radiation threat.
That is all i can say here. I am available 2 days a week if anyone wants company in this area. [last edit 9/22/2010 3:28 PM by Ammoclip - edited 1 times]

The more I am finding out about Oak ridge, the less I want to go. Haha Is it true parts of the facility are still in use? Yuck active site. Oh, talking with someone else made me consider some advice about GNAL. Weekdays in winter are the best time to explore Dawson Forest. In the winter time you can avoid alot of bugs, bees, and briars. Also, weekends can be quite busy with hunters, horse riders, and mountain bikers.

I am starting a new job in sec and I will have a good bit of pto with them. So wintertime may be best. I just hope I don't run I to any wild kangaroos while out there. Does this place seem worth it the more you find out or do you feel it's not worth it still

Oak Ridge, Tenn doesn't seem like it's going to be worth it. The GNAL site certainly has photo opportunity and the more publicity we can get GNAL, the better the chances of underground access. Personally I don't dig.

haha! Good ol' social engineering. Even if we get there and all underground entrances are filled, you'll still have a great time.
