|  | | | I paid a visit to a certain well known psychiatric hospital in the suburbs of Melbourne today and shot a bunch of photos. I guess everyone and their dog have already been here but it looks like the complex is finally going to get turned into housing so if you want to revisit it you'd better get a move on.
I found a notice on the front lawn that a Safeway Liquor would soon be built on the site, and workmen were already busy in one of the buildings. C'est la vie.
Parts of the site are already in use by the EPA and La Trobe university. The photos in the album take a quick tour around those areas before they dive into the abandoned sections.
Friends of mine who visited the site when it was still functioning as a psych hospital have already started sharing their stories with me:
"These pictures remind me of old friends.
I remember visiting my mate Julian there, after a drug induced psychotic episode. We watched him run laps of the little lawn area there while under heavy sedation. He was still bursting with energy. I...t was a sad visit. Julian never fully recovered his mental stability.
On a brighter note, my mate Rob spent a week there, again, sedated after a bad drug experience, locked in a ward full of young women similarly sedated and staff who would freely provide condoms for those who wanted them. Rob said it was like Disneyland for adults and he found it really hard to leave."
