| | | Post by Tupsumato Reminds me of that dead body they found in an abandoned Ukrainian hospital. |
I was going to say, pics, or it didn't happen, then I remembered the original purpose of this thread. We're probably not helping. ......................Kurtz
Tups, PM pics?

| | | Posted by Glass Every year some drunk people will fall off of/into one of the two dozen grain elevators in my area to their deadly deaths, but they've never been people from the exploring community, for lack of a better word. I know one guy who died while exploring a train yard, and have had a few near-fatal experiences in my adventures, as have many of my friends. It's not a safe hobby, but I think driving to abandoned buildings is far more dangerous than exploring them.

Is there any other kind of death than the deadly kind? =P I got a kick out of reading that you put "to their deadly deaths". =P It sounds like those grain elevator in Minneapolis are frickin people-eaters.
2 years ago Hugh Blanchard, a member of NSS, fell off a cliff at the area we just got back from exploring this last weekend. He had to be air-lifted out by helicopter medevac, and then died at the hospital. Less than 48 hrs ago I was standing at the place where he slipped, fell down a "chunnel" gulley (wet, slick, slippery rocky chute), then off a 40ft drop and landed upright, then fell over and hit his head. On the same hike, I had gone with the intended purpose of helping the group members to access a mine shaft that was located out on a cliff face. There was a "trail" leading out to it. Less than a foot wide, and completely missing in places. Until I got there I had been convinced that I could place anchors and rope it off; but upon seeing it... the rock in that area is DG (decomposed granite), I was roped off to a tree on the "trail", and grabbed hold of a rock. 2 seconds later the entire piece came loose, 200lbs of rock, and plummeted 60ft to the rocks below. The opening of the mine adit had a good 80 to 90ft drop below it. Very unstable rock structure on the cliff face, very nasty drop. In years past I prolly would have attempted it just myself, just to solo the shaft. These days though I pay alot more attention to things. I told them "we can't do it this way, it just isn't safe, and it's not worth it" Even though I wanted to do it SO BAD. Next time we go back, I'll rig an anchor point some 200 or so feet above that area and rappel down to it from above. We just didn't have time on that trip and were too worn out.
All that to say my advice. Know your limits. Know when something isn't worth it, and insist on it if you're the "expert" in the group. Or even if you aren't. Especially if you can come back another day and access it from a different direction.
Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =) |

| | | There was a guy on a parkour board (not uer) that I'm on who died when he missed a grab 3 floors up in am abandoned warehouse, but that's the only one I had even remote personal contact with. I've heard a number of "almost" stories though. Stay within your limits, stay sober, and stay cautious and you'll stay safer than you were on the drive there.

| | | I just learned tonight that the father of a family friend died two years ago after falling off a railroad bridge. Railfan, not urbex, but close... They found his camera and his tripod on the tracks, and him 60' beneath.

My TV is getting lousy reception at the moment because the antenna up on the roof needs to be adjusted. I'm sure I could get up pretty easily using the little ladder I've got but getting back down would be a bit dicey. I've decided it's not worth the risk to attempt it alone so I'll wait for my housemate to get back. Climbing up on my roof is nothing compared to some of the dumb shit I've done in abandoned buildings but I'm sure the gods of irony would really enjoy making me fall and break my neck here at home.
