My parents would stop at any abandoned anything, from buildings to mines, and take me along. Probably the earliest I remember is being somewhere between 5-7 years old. they didn't have some ulterior motive to protect themselves, it was just what they did. I did learn quite a bit along the way, so I'm glad they took me along to those places.

But, over 30 years later, I don't generally explore with minors, though more because I would feel very responsible for them, and I don't want to feel like I'm babysitting while exploring. If anything did go wrong though, it could definitely be worse legally, if a minor was there.

The other thing that came to my mind is hazards such as pcbs, asbestos, mold and the like, do they make respirators for kids that young? Also do you really want to subject kids to those hazards..?

Sweet Beezus people. I thought it was creepy when i saw little girl and guy with a camera. Then I knew it was his kid, but as i said he was just letting her run around in a place with holes in the floor and no railings. I guess I should have been more specific about this but it was definitely RUNNING. And he was just taking photos. Thats what started to bug me was thinking of when I have taken my daughter, and my first thought when she is there is definitely her safety. So, as we talked I told the guy yeah I have a daughter that I have taken out with me too, and he says "yeah, it's great if a cop shows up I bet." I asked what he meant, and he said "That's why I bring her. If a cop shows up, I will just tell him its for girl scouts or some bullshit. Who would arrest a guy for taking his kid out for some family bonding and scout crap haha."

I didn't mean to start some debate about how people raise their kids. lord knows i make my fair share of mistakes, and I definitely have let my kids do some stupid crap. Kids get hurt, and they learn from it. mine are always banged up. But the last thing I would do is take them somewhere dangerous like that and just turn away. I show them how to be safe, not just let them go run around playing in some place where they can get cut up on broken glass, or fall through a floor, cause I think it will be easier if a cop shows up. That is what I thought was the problem in the whole thing.

Now, on the subject of the "pre dusk assault" Yes, that did sound kind of weak.
I will take my lumps with that one. I promise never to use that phrase again.

Blah Blah Blah. Shut up and open the damn door.
"It's ok Officer, I watch a lot of cop shows on tv, so i am practically one of you guys." - sadly, that didn't work.

That's just creepy.

On the ethics question, until your child is old/mature enough to make her own decision on whether or not to enter an abandonment, I think it's child endangerment. This depends on the location, of course.

When I was twelve my whole family explored abandoned soviet bases in eastern Europe. I'm great full that my mom let us go.

These are some blurry screen shots. In them my 80 something grandfather was the oldest, and the youngest was a three year old cousin.

The three year old

My sister and uncle heading underground

Found an RPG7 warhead

My grandfather in one of the SAM bays (for a S-125, aka NATO SA-3 Goa)

Then we found the two soldiers who guarded the base, they were kind enough to show us their AK. Note my twelve year old cousin and the loaded mag attached.

I survived and am really glad I had the opportunity. Our family vacation kind of evolved into a UE vacation of abandoned soviet crap. This was only one of dozens of sites we explored.
