| | | Malt's days seem numbered... < on 8/15/2010 2:05 AM >
| | | I made a stop by malt today and noted a mysterious green fence that had been erected around the perimeter... as I walked the side I noticed that a figure in Ireland park had also been wrapped around with this green fence. This seemed very strange to to me and as I continued around the front I was greeted by a half torn down wall. Perhaps someone could shed some light on it. 1.

At least those boards cost less than the stupid computers they cover. Can anyone recall a time when they actually worked?

But when toronto says that it usually takes them many years and a ton of back and forth debate it would seem. This seems too sudden for that sort of thing. I'd look more into it, but to be honest Im so tired the words on the screen are blurring.

You might be thinking of the Grain Elevator, which went down in December.

| | | This building has been suffering from SEVERE structural issues for a couple of years now. All you need to do is walk around the building and you'll see evidence that it is quite literally falling apart on its own. My guess is that something fell loose from this wall and it was more of a hazard to keep it standing than to pull the wall. Now that they've opened it up, it's a matter of time before the rest of it comes down. I would really hate to see it happen, this used to be my favourite site in Toronto. But, considering that it is next to a busy airport and is pretty much an eyesore for 90% of those who see it - it's time to bring her down.

| | | Love the hanging off the rebar concrete blocks in #5, looks like a bolder suspended in mid air. When about were these taken, and what are these computers being spoken of?

It's not just the proximity to the airport that's a factor. This is our central waterfront. It needs to have quality buildings and attractive, inviting public spaces. Abandoned buildings generally work against such objectives. The silos are to be spared, though. I'm sure they can be incorporated somehow into a new structure. The Malting Plant's industrial buildings are supposed be demolished. I didn't think it would start so soon but then again the ship unloading structure by the water was removed earlier this year.

| | | I noticed this a few weeks ago as I live across the street. I was there with a few people a week or so back and we were contemplating giving it a go. We decided not to in the end. Might have been the right call though since the building they are tearing down's structure doesn't look too sound. Edit: spelling. [last edit 8/15/2010 9:43 PM by Neil T - edited 1 times]

| | | According to a post on BlogTO:
Waterfront germination and kiln buildings are coming down Posted by Robyn Urback / August 16, 2010 The city's demolition of the germination and kiln buildings at Canada Malting site will begin this Wednesday. The waterfront's Canada Malting complex is located at the southeast corner of Bathurst Street and Queen's Quay. The silos will come down as part of the waterfront's redevelopment, which will see restoration of the Canada Malting land's east dock wall later this year. Back in 2007, the area was eyed as a possibility for a heritage museum, and later rumoured to become a 600-space parking lot for the Island Airport.
