| | | Just curious... does everyone here carry a tripod with them when they are exploring? The more I look around this site, the better it gets! Looks like some of you are amateur (maybe some professional) photographers. Two things: - What do you carry with you when you explore (probably in the forums already... but onto my main question)? - What type of cameras / photography equipment do you use?

| | | Tripods are for n00bs, with my great ninja training I can hold a camera dead still for up to and including 30 minutes.

| | | I almost always take a tripod if I'm going to take photos. It's a cheap, crappy one, but it works. Canon EOS 400D, kit lens, fast 50mm lens, grey card, spare memory card for shooting exteriors. Too poor to buy more equipment. Always take a maglite, smokes and beer. Often end up taking any of my Leatherman, screwdrivers, Kleins, long nose pliers, picks, prybar, etc etc. Whatever the situation calls for. I wonder how many times this same exact thread has been made before.

| | | While I can appreciate your enthusiasm, I think this question would be better posted in the photography forum instead of the Great Lakes forum. Just saying. Also, I've noticed that different gear is more prevalent in certain areas than others. In Chicago, tripods are all the rage. Here in Minneapolis, Headlamps and rubber boots are the common gear. And if you are an explorer in the south, respirators are the hottest fashion accessory. In Wisconsin, it's beer. Oh who am I kidding? Beer is required equipment here in the Twin Cities too.

| | | I tried to use the search function and went back about four months unsuccessfully trying to find an older gear thread. Before I ended up breaking UER for about 5 minutes the homepage wouldn't load. A designated pimp your gear discussion thread would be nice. (like we have a designated which camera? and super rad threads)

| | | nice way of putting it clockwork. There's all sorts of different types of exploring trips: The scout: -Often involves a GPS, maps, notebooks, point & shoot camera, possibly binoculars, possibly digging/prying tools, small flashlight, etc. Building Exploring: -Often involves thick-sole shoes, flashlight(s), possible camera & tripod, etc. Underground Exploring: -Often involves waterproof or water-subjective shoes, flashlights, headlamps, backpacks, possible camera & gear, etc. Photography Trips: -One or more cameras & filters, tripod, often involves specialized lights for long exposures, including incandescents, LEDs, fluorescents, flashbulbs, tea candles, etc. Science Trips: -Often involves things that make science, like microscopes, test tubes, sledge hammers, bunsen burners, chainsaws, earl meyer flasks, explosives, etc. etc. and then you have even more specialized gear setups for unique trips, such as underground boating trips, rappeling trips, squatting trips, b&e trips, biking/skating trips, graffiti trips, movie/music trips, looting trips, rave trips, etc. etc. etc.
Have fun with your various types of exploring! [last edit 8/12/2010 10:33 AM by shotgun mario - edited 1 times]

Don't forget The Noob: -Involves printouts of the past year's UER threads discussing local sites, plus grappling hooks, camo clothing, ninja equipment, crowbars, spray paint, and your mom's rechargeable flashlight from 1981. A really cheap or disposable camera is optional, as long as the photos are sufficiently grainy, off-level, and/or contain teh orbz™

I always carry my tripod- good for use in dark places since I don't use flash! I carry my entire camera backpack, minus my 200-500mm lens, because it's freaking heavy and for use with wildlife or stalker photography only ;) I carry a Nikon D80, lately it's been all about the Sigma 10-20mm, i carry a 35-135 I use sometimes, and a macro lens that i LOVE but haven't used a lot lately..

| | | I always bring my tripod; its a big old heavy thing that can be used as a weapon if needed. And besides the camera and lenses, I bring the remote release, a couple levels (hotshoe-mounted and a larger, separate level), my Streamlight flashlight, possibly a couple small flashes and the Commander unit for them. That's all I can think of right now.

| | | I carry a manfrotto superclamp with a ball head mount. its awesome because I can break it down, carry it in two pockets and put it back together quick. I also have a hiking pole/monopod, also manfrotto. what I'm really digging is the bushhawk though. with the bipod, it rocks.

Occasional carry for me, cause it's frickin heavy; it weighs more than either of my tripods. Rock solid though. Gorillapods can't compare. Tripods: Slik Sprint Pro II (main tripod) Benro A-169M8 Travel Angel (backup tripod) Manfrotto 155 Double Ball Joint Head with Camera Platform & 035 Super Clamp Targus Digital TG-6660TR (temp tripod when $$ was lacking, not much use.)
No longer have: Sunpak 6601TM (plastic head fuckin' shattered when dropped from 12' roof) Gorillapod SLR (gave that one away -- it sucked anyways) Cameras Rebel XT (350D) EOS-3 35mm SLR Powershot 570IS that works when it wants to. Waiting for the DMC-LX5 to arrive then buying a DMC-LX3 for cheap. Lenses: Pro-Optic (Samyang) 8mm f/3.5 Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 HSM EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM EF 70-210mm f/3.5-4.5 USM EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 EF 50mm f/1.8 Misc: bubble level ebay: $5 opteka wireless radio remote release neewer RS-60E3 Timer Remote Control sandisk all in one card reader zeikos filter set 77mm, 67mm. I have a tamrac velocity 7x but the zippers broke and it's very awkward to wear climbing gear: black diamond vario speed harness / vario chest harness Petzl: grigri, ascension, croll, verso, torse, foot tape. Mammut: slings, figure 8, carabiners. 200' 9mm sterling superstatic 2 x 10' 8mm sterling superstatic sections junk rope: 150' section 3/8" cabelas rope 100' section 3/8" lehigh rope 3 x 25' sections 3/8" attwood rope 2 x 12' homemade rope ladders from attwood rope 2 x 50' of 1/4" attwood camo cord
I shove any combination of that into either my L.L. Bean Day Trekker Pack or L.L. Bean Escape Pack

Des Moines area. Not a lot in the city, but western Iowa is like a minefield of little locations, so it's been a fun summer.
