|  | | | New member Ensimismada here. By way of a self-introduction offering I bring some photos of my first drain, the most excellent Zodiac Drain in Durham. Many thanks to Avius for expedition leadership and for pointing me to the UER.ca website. We spent less than 2 hours below but I think I'm hooked. 
As a hobbyist photographer, I am very much excited for the possibilities of drain (& other UE-type) photography, largely spurred on by some of the phenomenal images on this very site. I'm glad to have joined.
For this trip I didn't have access to my tripod. However, my self-stabilizing lens seems to have come to the partial rescue - almost anything's better than using the flash! Let's see if you agree that these handheld images are bearable (and feel free to critique if you think not):

| | | | Awesome. Fun times were had by all. These shots are waaay better than my first drain pictures- which were all blurry, flash-lit disasters, and which numbered in the low single-digits before I dropped my camera in the water.

| | | | Sucks to have a camera that's not waterproof and shockproof; you've got to baby it some a lot. I've considered buying a really durable point-and-shoot but apart from worrying about the high humidity in drains, I'm used to hauling my dSLR around not-so-friendly environs. And I think I'd miss it more than I worry about it, at this point. In the end, a camera is a tool: a really expensive tool, but still just a tool.

|  | | | Buying a camera and not using it where you want is a waste of money. Top shots; too bad y'all didn't get to the shrine. I'm out of the state for now but I travel. A lot. There aren't many drainers in PA so you'll have free reign there. Good luck!

Thanks, AppleSnail. It's a shame we missed each other down in NC, but maybe later. Hopefully by the time you're 'round up north, I'll have stumbled across something cool to share! I did try to get to the shrine by I quickly realized draining is hard work! Next time, I'll take my time going in to conserve my energy a little bit better.
And maybe I'll hire some shorter guides.

Skateboard, wagon with low sides and padding, etc. Large wheels and a low seat are better.

I've seen this posted as a suggestion several times, often alongside the term "drainbiking." It intrigues me but is it really worth the effort? I mean, this drain had some sections with lots of debris. I can't imagine the hassle of hauling around a wagon.
On the other hand, my back, neck, and shoulders love the idea!

Roll through the long sections of smooth concrete and gravel, and pull the wagon behind you over the rough parts, like the short brick-arch section and the (later) box/balloon hybrid. It lets you take breaks on a dry seat, too.

| | | | I personally drag my DSLR with me into to some really dumb places for that thing... falling into the creek in Charlotte with it strapped to my back and almost breaking my ankle in order to try and keep it out of the water as I fell is a good memory. But man has it been worth it.
I do get point and shoot envy sometimes though.
Thats a fun drain (even the insanely long insanely short box section) with a lot to see. I was finally reduced to just crawling through that section.

I might be replying too seriously to a joke but I have a few friends who build recumbents and honestly you're going to have a bitch of a time with anything more than 4-6 inches high in the way. I have never managed to bunny hop them over anything more than an inch or two with out nasty scrapping, accompanied by "ok give me my bike back now."

That's why I stick with skateboards. The steering doesn't fight you, they work ok in nearly-clear drains, and they're cheap. Razor scooters would be great if you could lock the steering and cut the handle to about 10" height. Things this size can be carried over rough spots. A skateboard with giant wheels would be the best bang for your buck. You can actually cut a roll of duct tape in half and wind it onto wheels if you want to try it (Takes about an hour and two rolls).
