The old city of Bynum

My buddy and I were bored and wanted to go look at something. He started talking about this small city that was 15 minutes from our house that he did some survey work at and there was an old ass building. So we went out there and it was alright. I guess they turned it into a state park because a park ranger came over and talked to us to see what we were doing. But he was straight, just told us to be careful, he just wanted to make sure we werent tagging.

After looking at the building for a little bit, we went to check the view from the river and noticed a few other buildings right up the street. Apparently they were once a Post Office, a theater, and a general store. The general store was a two story building that had no roof but had a forest growing in the middle of it. Most of the trees were only around 15 or 20 years old but there were a few that were a lot older, I couldnt bear hug them because they were to thick, at least 40 or 50 years old I am assuming. Also found some really old soda bottles such as Canada Dry Wink, RC cola, and some old pop top beer cans

Im not a photographer, just a person who enjoys history, but apparently all my photos are to large to upload, so I will have to see what I can do to get them on here

Lawlz. Don't mind the Don. I think he was making a friendly jab.

Your best bet for posting pictures is to get a free account on a hosting service like Flickr or Photobucket.

Here is a thread with pretty good instructions on various ways to get those pictures to show up here:

Bynum is a fun place. Unfortunately they demolished a big chunk of it about a year ago.

Wow. I've been to Bynum before but it looks like I missed a bunch of stuff when I was there. I've been to the first building you were talking about but missed the others.

It's actually in the DB:

http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=26744

In 1779, Luke Bynum bought land upon which to build a gristmill and covered bridge. In 1872, the Bynum Manufacturing Co built a textile mill for weaving cotton cloth, while continuing to run the gristmill. The commonly accepted territory of Bynum includes the area immediately off of Bynum Road. The town grew up around the mill, which was set on the Haw River. Originally, the company built 14 cotton mill houses available for rent to its employees. As the mill grew, the town grew and became a vibrant community. In the 1930’s there were five stores, a movie theater, and a high school in Bynum. The mill burned down in 1916, but was soon rebuilt. In 1922, electricity was installed and 29 more mill houses built (total of about 40 houses for workers). The textile mill was alternately operated under the name Odell Manufacturing Company. The mill closed operations in 1986. An additional fire occurred around 2000 leaving only a few remaining buildings. The old Bynum bridge was built in 1923 and closed to traffic in 1999. The one lane bridge is only open to foot traffic now and the new 15-501 bridge (1000 ft upstream) completely bypasses the small town now leaving a mostly dead neighborhood except for a few remaining locals.

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go..." -Dr. Suess

The other buildings are up the street from the footbridge (no need to cross though). If you look up the street, you will see these old structures close to where the road the church is on. They are interesting especially with the forest in the wall of the old structures

Glad to see they haven't torn it down yet. I was there about a year ago...the graffiti bridge is probably my favorite part about that place.

Here's my small set from Bynum... it was actually the first place I ever used my DSLR at

Your camera is much better than mine, i have an old digital cannon. And the last ones i took were with my phone, my digital card got filled. It was miserable when I went the other day because of the heat, mosquitos, and gnats, but the park ranger was cool

They ran me off the first part of the day I was there. I just went and took pics off the bridge and waited for them to leave, then went back.

Where exactly are you located? There is a bunch of stuff around the raleigh area

Im down, just let me know when, I dont have to start work till August 16, so I am pretty free. Would enjoy seeing some local spots, me and my room mate are trying to plan some trips coming this fall and winter. He went to the abandoned mental hospital up in Banner Elk many years ago, and wants to check it out again.
