What a great idea, keep those properties from ever generating property tax income from the city! They must not realize that construction of new homes has crashed, or that no one likes to build homes in the city limits even at the best of times (everyone prefers the suburbs). They'd be shooting themselves in the foot on this one.

A better plan would be to sell extremely cheaply, or give these away, with the requirement that the owners fix them up. Heck, they could move homeless people into them! That way the city makes money on property taxes and can say they're doing their part for affordable housing. However, that'd drive down what remains of private home sales, and those people have more free cash to bribe lobby with than the people who could use affordable housing.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.
